Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey is finally at peace with his Ashes infamy.<\/p>\n

Carey initially struggled to cope with the controversy sparked by his stumping of Jonny Bairstow in the 2023 Ashes series that prompted wild scenes at the home of cricket, Lord’s.<\/p>\n

Carey threw down the stumps as Bairstow wandered out of his crease, believing the end of an over had been called \u2014 it had not, and the Englishman was given out.<\/p>\n

Smith named skipper for Perth as Cummins ruled out<\/a><\/p>\n

Pat Cummins is officially ruled out of the first Ashes Test against England, with Steve Smith named to step in as skipper in Perth.<\/p>\n

With a home Ashes series looming, Carey insists he wants to take part in more big moments such as the Bairstow controversy.<\/p>\n

“I want to be more involved this year, it’s what you play cricket for, is the really big series,” Carey told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“Last year we had India come out here and that was an amazing experience to play against them on home soil and to win that trophy.<\/p>\n

“For us, and for me, it’s our jobs to go out there and play good cricket.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be exciting \u2026 the Barmy Army, I think I’ve seen a few chants come through already, which is great.<\/p>\n

“That sort of stuff just, it’s in the history of the game, it will get spoken about forever.<\/p>\n

“But as a player and as a playing group, you want to be in those big moments.”<\/p>\n

Three men were stripped of their MCC membership for abusing the Australian team in the Lord’s pavilion and Carey was vilified in England for the remainder of the 2023 Ashes.<\/p>\n

“I try to focus pretty hard and sort of block that stuff out,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I experienced it in over in England so hopefully the Australian crowd can sort of block out some of that noise \u2014 and we have more fans here for Australia than England.<\/p>\n

“But it’s part of the game.<\/p>\n

“We love it, it’s sports \u2014 totally understand there’s heroes and villains. That’s what Ashes cricket is all about.”<\/p>\n

Another Ashes villain, retired England paceman Stuart Broad, has been involved in the pre-series banter by describing Australia’s current Test team as the worst since 2010.<\/p>\n

“Is that he said, did he? We’ll wait and see,” Carey said.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got a really experienced cricket team who have had a lot of success over the last three, four years, five years under Patty Cummins.<\/p>\n

“To win a World Test Championship, to retain the Ashes over there, and to make another World Test Championship last year was pretty good recognition for the success that this team has had.<\/p>\n

“All the guys have played against Stuart in the past and we know how big a competitor he is and how much he’s done for Test cricket.<\/p>\n

“When you see players transition into the media, they’re absolutely open to their opinions and the playing group doesn’t hold any comments against anyone.”<\/p>\n

Australia enter the Ashes series starting in Perth on November 21 without injured skipper Cummins, with Steve Smith taking the captaincy.<\/p>\n
