{"id":246406,"date":"2025-10-28T13:29:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T13:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/246406\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T13:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T13:29:11","slug":"humpback-whale-found-dead-tangled-in-shark-net-at-coledale-north-of-wollongong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/246406\/","title":{"rendered":"Humpback whale found dead tangled in shark net at Coledale north of Wollongong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A humpback whale has been found dead off the Illawarra coast, entangled in a New South Wales government shark net.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 8-metre whale was spotted off the shore at Wombarra Beach, next to Coledale Beach, by members of the public about 8:30am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), Marine Rescue Port Kembla and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) responded and found the juvenile whale dead in the water with netting wrapped around it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A spokesperson for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development\u00a0confirmed the whale was entangled in the Coledale Beach shark net, installed under the NSW government&#8217;s Shark Meshing Bather Protection Program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Coledale is one of five beaches on the Illawarra coast and 51 statewide fitted with a shark net under the program.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image of whale tail with netting around it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bc630a0e9900485e95f11b0315df8176\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The whale was found entangled in a shark net in Coledale. (Supplied: Khynan Gardner\/ORRCA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ORRCA president Ashley Ryan said the whale was migrating south to Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all speculation at this point, but it does look like the whale has died after becoming caught in the shark net. (Supplied: Khynan Gardner\/ORRCA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If it&#8217;s found that this whale has gotten caught in the shark net, struggled and died a really slow and painful death by drowning, that&#8217;s heartbreaking,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So many people would find that absolutely tragic. Just devastating, really. (Supplied: ORRCA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Marine Rescue NSW, Wollongong City Council and NPWS, assisted by an ORRCA drone, spent hours trying to retrieve the carcass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was reasonably close to the shore, so around 3pm the decision was made to abandon the effort only due to safety,&#8221; said Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Stuart Massey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ORRCA is warning the community to avoid the water because of an elevated risk of sharks in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The whale washed in to shore on Tuesday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If conditions permit, NPWS and local council will remove the carcass and a necropsy will be performed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shark nets under fire<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cr Whittaker, who ran for the New South Wales Greens, said the state government should review the controversial shark nets program following the whale death.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"blonde woman\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/916a539b442e80df3cd9053ac6f99cb0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jess Whittaker has reignited calls for a shark net program review. I don&#8217;t think we should wait until the end of the season,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know that they don&#8217;t work, it&#8217;s a public safety hazard and a hazard to wildlife.
