Ajla Tomljanovic said social media companies dismissed her complaints about “disgusting” online abuse she’s received, stating messages she’s been sent have “wished death on her family.”

Speaking ahead of the Hong Kong Open, the Australian, 32, who takes on seventh-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the second round, said she had taken her grievances to tech companies about the incessant abuse she cops online but “I get feedback saying they [the senders] did nothing wrong”.

“But in my DMs they’ve called my whole family horrible names and wished death on them,” she told the South China Morning Post.

“I don’t know how there’s not a better system, so accounts can be blocked forever.

“It’s horrible, I don’t know how someone can write the things we receive. It’s daily, when we’re not even playing.”

Tomljanovic suspected the abuse stemmed from people “not hating me, they probably put all their savings on my match”.

“I want to tell them all, ‘you’re so silly to bet on tennis, it’s so up and down and everyone can play, take my name out of it’,” she said.

Amid complaints from players about the schedule, Tomljanovic has previously admitted that she saw a psychologist about her mental health to help her cope with life on tour.

But she said players have to look at the broader picture when assessing the current state of the game.

“It’s a fine line, I don’t want it to seem like we’re ungrateful,” she said.

“It’s important to talk about things with your team, and great that we have visibility on mental health and that people can get help. But we’re very lucky to travel the world and do this for our job.
