For years, the inclusion of dance numbers in Bollywood <\/a>films has sparked debate, with some questioning their relevance to the story and accusing them of promoting vulgarity. However, Malaika Arora<\/a> believes that item songs have come a \u201clong way,\u201d evolving to focus less on provocation and more on performance.<\/p>\n

Malaika spoke about the changing definition of special dance numbers in Bollywood during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. She admitted that dance numbers have come a \u2018long way\u2019 since she started.<\/p>\n

Malaika said, \u201cEarlier, they were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often detached from a woman\u2019s individuality. Today, filmmakers are more conscious\u2026 they integrate these numbers into stories with stronger character context. It\u2019s less about being provocative and more about performance and presence. I see it as an evolution where women can own their space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here, Malaika shared that \u2018item songs\u2019 are often associated with the male gaze and doesn\u2019t deny the perception.<\/p>\n

She shared, \u201cYes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I\u2019ve always looked at them differently. For me, dance is about confidence and expression. When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment and bringing my own energy to it. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that\u2019s what matters most. It\u2019s about celebrating the art and having fun with it rather than overthinking the labels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malaika is back on the screen with a special dance number Poison Baby in Ayushmann Khurrana<\/a> and Rashmika Mandanna\u2019s latest release Thamma.<\/p>\n

She shared that doing the song was more about celebrating her journey and \u201cshowing that you can stay relevant and passionate at any stage\u201d and that \u201cage doesn\u2019t define your capacity to perform or inspire.\u201d<\/p>\n
