{"id":248139,"date":"2025-10-29T07:12:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T07:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/248139\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T07:12:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T07:12:10","slug":"how-hurricane-melissa-was-supercharged-by-hot-oceans-in-the-caribbean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/248139\/","title":{"rendered":"How Hurricane Melissa was supercharged by hot oceans in the Caribbean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As Hurricane Melissa made its way from the Atlantic Ocean into the Caribbean and towards Jamaica this week, it passed through waters the temperature of a lukewarm bath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Just south of the island country, it hit waters above 30 degrees Celsius, where it rapidly intensified into a category five storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Hurricanes, or tropical cyclones, use warm water to gain their power; the hotter the water, the more powerful they become.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">According to Climate Central, Hurricane Melissa travelled over waters made 1.4C warmer on average by human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sea surface temperature map\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cecb5764608ff0bb406328f6f6af479f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The water in the Caribbean Sea reached over 30C on Monday. (ABC\/NOAA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Climate Central scientist Kristina Dahl said Hurricane Melissa was &#8220;absolutely historic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s going to go down as one of the strongest storms on record in the Atlantic,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s also very clear that this storm bears the fingerprints of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know that the waters that it passed over as it was churning through the Caribbean were made about 1.5C warmer because of climate change, and all that extra heat made the storm stronger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When Hurricane Melissa hit those exceptionally warm waters, it moved incredibly slowly, giving it time to gain strength and power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It then underwent what is known as extreme rapid intensification \u2014 with an increase of 111 kilometres per hour in just 24 hours, which is double the standard threshold for rapid intensification.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An illustration showing how arm water increases moisture which intensifies an existing hurricane\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/8888c07ba5234c505c0a842d4ac7e9a2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">To rapidly intensify, a storm needs to cross extraordinarily warm waters that extend into deeper layers, providing a reserve of fuel and energy. (ABC News: Sharon Gordon)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We see more and more hurricanes undergoing rapid intensification as the climate warms,&#8221; Dr Dahl said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And most of the storms in the Atlantic basin this year that have reached hurricane strength underwent rapid intensification.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Storm of the century&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Hurricane Melissa, which has been dubbed the &#8220;storm of the century&#8221; by the World Meteorological Organization, at least so far, also shook off three different meteorological conditions that usually weaken major hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Normally, when a storm like this gets strong enough, the eye wall collapses and is replaced by a smaller eye, at least temporarily weakening the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Hurricane Melissa showed some signs of being ready to do this, but it never did, according to University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"They eye of hurricane Melissa satellite image\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/508b1430dc4fd59f352460f7c3ee158f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A high-resolution view of the eye of Hurricane Melissa in the centre of dense cirrus clouds. (NOAA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The second thing that usually weakens hurricanes is mountains, even small island ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was next to a big mountainous island and it doesn&#8217;t even notice it&#8217;s there,&#8221; Mr McNoldy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It hit Jamaica as a category five storm with winds of up to 225 kph, but after crossing the island relatively quickly, weakened to category three.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The third ingredient that normally slows a hurricane down is the deeper, colder water that gets dragged up from below when it has been sitting in the same spot for a while.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-02\/hottest-year-on-record-in-oceans-around-australia\/105698530\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The oceans keep score of record heat<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">For the past year, Australia&#8217;s oceans have been hotter than ever before. The impacts are being felt all across the nation \u2014 as far away from the coast as you can get.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That cold water normally acts to reduce the fuel fanning the flames, so to speak, but not for Hurricane Melissa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The thing about climate change is that all of those waters are warmer than they used to be,&#8221; atmospheric scientist Kevin Trenberth said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The so-called &#8216;cold wake&#8217; that gets left behind these storms has not been as distinctive in this case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rain, wind and speed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Trenberth said that climate change was making tropical cyclones more intense, with higher wind speeds and heavier rainfalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The first thing that people talk about, indeed, is increases in intensity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The storm spins up stronger, and there are stronger winds that push it into, in this case, a category five storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But in addition, these storms can often grow to be bigger \u2026 bigger storms, more intense storms, [that] have very heavy rainfalls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the extent of the damage across Jamaica is still being measured, Dr Trenberth said it was likely the country experienced very high rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he said it was lucky the hurricane passed quickly over the island, limiting the impacts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For every degree Celsius of warming, there&#8217;s about 7 per cent more moisture that the atmosphere can hold,&#8221; Dr Trenberth said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And in general, I would say there is something like, 10 to 15 per cent more moisture in the atmosphere in this region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These storms reach out and grab all of that moisture that produces the main fuel for the storm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman hugging a child\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/9ea398f4e84872bc2bdff4353e627490\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">People shelter in a school in Haiti as Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica.
