The contract is currently awaiting final approval from the Sports Authority of India (SAI).Nieva’s return marks a strategic shift in India’s boxing roadmap, especially after a disappointing medal-less campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics.According to a senior BFI official, Nieva specifically wanted to work with the Indian elite women boxers this time as he felt “there’s immense untapped potential in the women’s squad”.

Poll

Will Santiago Nieva’s strategy lead Indian women boxers to the medals in LA 2028?

BFI officials are optimistic about Nieva’s comeback. “Santiago brings a wealth of experience and tactical acumen. His previous tenure saw historic performances, including Amit Panghal winning a silver and Manish Kaushik a bronze at the 2019 men’s World Championships. We believe he can replicate similar success with the women’s team,” another BFI official said. After the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where Indian male boxers failed to win medals, Nieva stepped down in May 2022 and took up a role with the Australian national team. His return is seen as a stabilizing move amid frequent changes in the coaching setup. The women’s team has seen multiple transitions since Raffaele Bergamasco’s departure in Sept 2021.Meanwhile, discussions are underway to appoint Abhishek Malviya as the chief coach of the men’s national team. Malviya, currently stationed at SAI’s National Centre of Excellence in Rohtak, has previously served as the men’s youth chief coach. Known for his grassroots work and technical training modules, Malviya is seen as a strong candidate to lead the men’s team into the next Olympic cycle.BFI sources confirmed that Malviya’s name has been forwarded for consideration, and an official announcement is expected soon. “He understands the domestic circuit well and has worked extensively with emerging talent. His appointment would complement Nieva’s international experience,” said a BFI insider. As Indian boxing gears up for a new phase, with the Commonwealth Games as well as the Asian Games lined up next year, the appointments of Nieva and Malviya could prove pivotal in the country’s medal aspirations.

NEW DELHI: In a major development in Indian boxing, Swedish coach Santiago Nieva is set to return to…

[571
64,63,802,21394,96669,147365,147364,147362,85,42089,147363
post-248183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-boxing","tag-boxing-federation-of-india","tag-indian-boxing","tag-indian-olympic-team","tag-los-angeles-olympics-2028","tag-santiago-nieva","tag-sports","tag-sports-authority-of-india","tag-womens-boxing-team
["GET
