Emma Thompson has spoken of her frustration over the increasing proliferation of AI prompts when writing.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Stephen Colbert<\/a> on his late night talkshow, Thompson, who won an Oscar for her 1996 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, spoke of her \u201cintense irritation\u201d with AI.<\/p>\n Clenching her fists, Thompson told Colbert that she usually writes scripts longhand due to a belief in a \u201cconnection between the brain and the hands\u201d, before transferring to the script to Microsoft\u2019s word-processing app.<\/p>\n \u201cRecently, the Word document is constantly saying, \u2018Would you like me to rewrite that for you?\u2019\u201d said Thompson said, in reference to Word\u2019s AI system Copilot<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so I end up just going, \u2018I don\u2019t need you to fucking rewrite what I\u2019ve just written! Will you fuck off? Just fuck off! I\u2019m so annoyed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Thompson went on to say that her run-ins with technology are not new, and that when she was finishing the Sense and Sensibility script, \u201cI came back from the loo to find that it had changed the entire script into hieroglyphs \u2026 completely gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n She then went in her dressing gown to Stephen Fry\u2019s house, where he spent eight hours recovering the script, \u201cand it came out in one long sentence\u201d.<\/p>\n Thompson then \u201chad to re-do it. The computer had taken it and hidden it \u2026 like it had done it on purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking in 2023 at a conference in Cambridge, Thompson railed against the new labelling of creative storytelling as \u201ccontent\u201d and said that focusing on raw honesty while writing was key to a script\u2019s efficacy.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat is authentic, whether you like it or not,\u201d she said, \u201cis going to be meaningful to somebody. You find your audience by being completely authentic.\u201d<\/p>\n Trying to produce a script according to a formula, she said, led to films that elicited unhappy results. \u201cYou sit there and you watch them and you wonder why, at the end of it, you feel a bit ill.\u201d<\/p>\n Thompson is promoting new TV detective series Down Cemetery Road<\/a>, and won rave reviews for her performance as a widow who tries to thwart kidnappers in the recent film The Dead of Winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n Hollywood is fighting back against the rise of AI in both unauthorised use of images and in the scripting and production of movies. Over the weekend, the director Guillermo Del Toro said he would \u201crather die\u201d than use generative AI while making films.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m 61,\u201d he said, \u201cand I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak \u2026 The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, \u2018What is your stance on AI?\u2019 And my answer was very short.
