Actor William Daniels is expressing his distaste for President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s controversial updates to the White House with a poignant throwback. <\/p>\n

On Monday, Daniels shared a photo of himself<\/a> and two co-stars in full costume from Broadway\u2019s \u201c1776,\u201d in which he portrayed John Adams. In 1970, the musical \u2015 which depicts the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence \u2015 became the first ever to be staged in its entirety<\/a> at the White House, then occupied by President Richard Nixon. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe performed \u20181776\u2019 in the beautiful East Room when Nixon was in the White House. He was very gracious even though none of us had voted for him,\u201d Daniels, best known by some for his portrayal of George Feeny on \u201cBoy Meets World,\u201d wrote in the caption<\/a>. \u201cThe current president has ripped a piece of history from our lives and we mustn\u2019t take this lightly.\u201d <\/p>\n

The 98-year-old\u2019s post was a pointed dig at Trump\u2019s plans<\/a> for a 90,000-square-foot, $300 million ballroom adjacent to the White House. Last week, construction crews demolished the entirety of the White House\u2019s East Wing to make way for the project, drawing outrage<\/a> from historic preservationists. <\/p>\n

The East Room, where Daniels and his castmates performed \u201c1776\u201d some 55 years ago, is part of the White House\u2019s Executive Residence and therefore not believed to have been demolished. However, Trump has cited<\/a> the relatively small size<\/a> of the East Room, which has a capacity of about 200 people, in outlining his vision for the ballroom, now set<\/a> to reportedly accommodate 999. He suggested last week<\/a> that the ballroom could be connected to the East Room. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to build a room that\u2019s going to be able to hold literally the inauguration if we want,\u201d Trump said earlier this month, according to USA Today<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The ballroom\u2019s shifting details<\/a> and before-and-after photos<\/a> showing the scale of the East Wing demolition have also been condemned by many prominent Democrats<\/a>, who point to Trump\u2019s previous claims that the construction \u201cwouldn\u2019t interfere with the current building.\u201d <\/p>\n

The president, however, has rejected accusations that he hasn\u2019t made the full extent of the project clear, telling the BBC<\/a> and other outlets last week, \u201cI think we\u2019ve been more transparent than anyone\u2019s ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n
