{"id":251046,"date":"2025-10-30T14:09:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T14:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/251046\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T14:09:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T14:09:09","slug":"townsville-hospital-ceo-says-some-patients-may-die-after-urology-bungle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/251046\/","title":{"rendered":"Townsville Hospital CEO says some patients may die after urology bungle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some patients may die as a result of the Townsville Hospital&#8217;s urology unit bungle, the hospital&#8217;s CEO has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland Health has commissioned an independent investigation into how and why the largest hospital in the state&#8217;s north failed to provide follow-up appointments and diagnostic test results to hundreds of patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) CEO Keiran Keyes said a total of 218 patients experienced gaps in their care, and 77 of those had been or may have been exposed to harm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For some of these 77 patients, they will be experiencing a [metastasis] of their cancer which may actually result in their death,&#8221; Mr Keyes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a very confronting fact for the health professionals in our system to recognise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Keyes said some adversely affected patients may have also experienced prolonged symptoms which could have been resolved earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The number of suspected affected patients has decreased since last week, when Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-22\/urology-healthcare-investigation-townsville\/105920928\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105920928\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">576 THHS patients had been lost to the system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The estimated number of patients thought to have been adversely affected has increased from 25 to 77.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sign outside of the emergency department at the Townsville University Hospital in the afternoon light. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d95eb4fb1e33f11eeab3ad1b5f6770c4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Townsville Hospital and Health Service urology practices are under review.\u00a0 (ABC North Qld: Chloe Chomicki)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were initially concerned about 576 individual patient episodes, and I can confirm, having reviewed those more closely, that 218 [patients] have been lost to our urology service,&#8221; Mr Keyes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Lost to service means we will have seen you, referred you for a diagnostic test and we&#8217;ve got no record of bringing you back or we&#8217;ve asked you to come back and see us in six months and again we&#8217;ve got no record of bringing you back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Keyes said the worst affected patients, those experiencing a metastasis of cancer, would be seen by additional urologists set to begin work at THHS next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A separate inquiry into urologist shortages in Queensland is being led by the state health department.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a man with grey hair and glasses speaks to reporters at a  press conference\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761833349_395_d38426f9fd62e3fd7b9e441f74f8c3bc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Nicholls says the public is right to be concerned about THHS.
