Will Hayward says his trade to Carlton \u201cprobably could\u2019ve been handled better\u201d by Sydney as he and fellow Blues recruit Ollie Florent opened up on their moves.<\/p>\n
Hayward and Florent were both thrown into Charlie Curnow trade talks earlier this month as part of the Swans\u2019 efforts to acquire the superstar forward.<\/p>\n
The two close mates, both 27, initially didn\u2019t want to leave Sydney, having each signed five-year contract extensions last year through to 2029.<\/p>\n

For Free and confidential support call 1800 858 858 or visit gamblinghelponline.org.au.<\/p>\n But conversations with the Swans during the trade period while they were on holiday in Argentina ultimately convinced them to move on.<\/p>\n Florent recalled a phone call from Sydney footy boss Leon Cameron that convinced him his future was elsewhere.<\/p>\n \u201cOh yeah, it was tough. It was definitely tough,\u201d Florent told <\/a>AFL Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThey pretty much just said we want you out. We want you gone.\u201d<\/p>\n Hayward received a call from Swans coach Dean Cox along the same lines.<\/p>\n \u201cOver the whole period, I had two phone calls with \u2018Coxy\u2019,\u201d Hayward told AFL Media.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s pretty much it. Those phone calls made it pretty easy to want to join Carlton.\u201d<\/p>\n Hayward was ironically courted by Carlton last year when he was eligible for free agency, before recommitting to Sydney.<\/p>\n The forward and Florent have played their entire 184-game careers at Sydney after being drafted together in the first round of the 2016 National Draft.<\/p>\n \u201cIt probably could\u2019ve been handled better,\u201d Hayward added.<\/p>\n \u201cThat club is full of great people. It\u2019s probably just a little slip-up with how it was handled. It\u2019s a great club. But I also don\u2019t want to take that away from the fact that I\u2019m super grateful to be here and that I\u2019m actually really happy to be here.<\/p>\n \u201cThat movie is finished now. We\u2019re starting a new one here and we\u2019re super excited.\u201d<\/p>\n Florent also said \u201cI don\u2019t really want to talk badly of the Swans\u201d after he \u201chad the best time there.\u201d<\/p>\n The utility, who was involved in a separate trade to the Curnow deal, was dropped to the VFL for parts of this season.<\/p>\n Sydney and Carlton ultimately agreed on a Curnow deal in the final minutes of the trade period that saw the Swans give up Hayward, Pick 11 and two future first-round picks for Curnow and three second-rounders.<\/p>\n It capped off a busy off-season of player movement at Ikon Park.
