The Brazilian is seeking to be recognised as the rightful 2008 champion, as well<\/p>\n<p>But in their defence, the FIA\u2019s, Formula One Management\u2019s and Bernie Ecclestone\u2019s lawyers have taken a different view, claiming Massa\u2019s downfall was not the result of a conspiracy, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/articles\/single-seaters\/f1\/fia-defence-claims-massa-crashgate-case-as-torturous-as-it-is-overly-ambitious\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">season littered with his own and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferrari<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/articles\/single-seaters\/f1\/fia-defence-claims-massa-crashgate-case-as-torturous-as-it-is-overly-ambitious\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2019s mistakes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They have a case to make. Starting fourth, he spun at the first corner on cold tyres and hit the barriers, dropping to the back before mounting a short-lived recovery.<\/p>\n<p>His race unravelled further when he collided with Coulthard\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/red-bull-racing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Bull<\/a> while attempting an overtake, damaging his front wing and prompting a pitstop.<\/p>\n<p>Later, an engine failure sealed his retirement \u2014 one of several mechanical issues that plagued <a team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/kimi-raikkonen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kimi R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen<\/a> after comfortably running in second place.<\/p>\n<p>However, on lap 30, while trying to keep pace with his team-mate, Massa lost control under braking for Turn 8 and spun into the gravel, beaching the car and ending his race on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>The spin cost him eight points \u2013 a potentially decisive loss in a championship.<\/p>\n<p><a conditions and led through the early stages, but a mistake at Sainte Devote on lap 16 saw him slide wide and surrender the lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/robert-kubica\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Kubica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though he recovered to reclaim track position during the pitstops, Ferrari\u2019s strategy to switch him to dry tyres a few laps too early left him struggling for grip.<\/p>\n<p>Massa finished third, but the result could have been a misjudgement and pitlane chaos.<\/p>\n<p>After stopping under the safety car, Ferrari failed to give him enough fuel due to a technical problem, forcing him to pit again the very next lap and dropping him to the back of the field.<\/p>\n<p>From there, Massa mounted a pretty impressive recovery drive, pulling off one of the overtakes of the season as he sliced past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/rubens-barrichello\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rubens Barrichello<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/heikki-kovalainen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heikki Kovalainen<\/a> in one move at the hairpin.<\/p>\n<p>But fifth career.<\/p>\n<p>In torrential rain at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/archive\/article\/june-1960\/15\/innes-ireland-drives-brilliantly-to-win-brdc-inter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Silverstone<\/a>, the Ferrari driver spun five times during the race.
