Scarborough Beach will transform into a global sporting arena next weekend as Perth hosts the Facto Financial Beach Tennis Open.

As part of the official International Tennis Federation Beach Tennis World Tour, the BT10 and BT100 event will see elite players from around the world descend on the coast to compete for $15,000 in prize money and valuable world ranking points.

Among those competing is former world number one Luca Cramarossa, who is still ranked 23rd in the ITF official rankings.

The four-day event is free for all spectators to attend, and it is the fourth time the tournament has come to Perth, with last year’s edition staged at City Beach.

Visitors of all ages and abilities are also being invited to come down to try beach tennis and take part in weekend activities, with 12 courts set to be in place for the duration of the event.

Co-founder and president of Beach Tennis WA, Tuko Maia, says this year’s event will be the biggest yet as the sport’s popularity continues to grow across the State.

“We’re expecting around 150 players so far, across all categories, beginners, intermediate, advanced, mixed doubles, over-40s,” he said.

“Even though we’re hosting an international event, our focus is always on community, anyone can come and try beach tennis, learn the skills, and enjoy the weekend.”

Alongside the tournament, spectators can enjoy food trucks offering local flavours, enjoy live music from Marcio Mendes and Pagode dos Amigos, and take part in free dance.

The main centre court will be at the Scarborough Amphitheatre, and the tournament will be streamed live for free on “PLAY BT”.

Tuko describes the event as “one big sports party” and is encouraging the local community to get involved.

“It’s fun, colourful, loud, and everyone can enjoy it. It’s a combination of sport, music, and health,” Tuko said.

“The atmosphere is amazing, young, old, and people of all abilities can enjoy it.

“You can sit on the sand, bring a beach chair, or watch from the amphitheatre, and it really gives a sense of community and fun.”

Guto Simoneto, originally from Brazil, has been playing beach tennis for 13 years and is now based in Australia. He will compete as one of the country’s top-ranked players, currently ranked 67th in the world.

Speaking to PerthNow, Guto said the sport was more than just a game to him.

“For me, the best thing about beach tennis is the sun, the beach, and being with friends. It’s really social, it’s not just competition,” he said.

“It’s sunshine, fresh air, and community. You play barefoot on the sand, and it just makes you feel alive.

“It’s become huge in Brazil and Europe, and now it’s starting to grow in Australia too. We’re still developing, but it’s getting bigger and bigger.”

Given the international publicity the tournament gives the area, City of Stirling mayor Mark Irwin said the city was proud to support the event.

“Events like this are very important to the City and our local businesses, not only because of their direct economic impact but also because they promote Scarborough Beach as a premier destination for tourists and events,” Mr Irwin said.

Earlier this year, Beach Tennis WA’s HQ at Abbett Park Reserve in Scarborough, the State’s first dedicated beach tennis venue, faced potential closure due to noise complaints.

Following public backlash over the news that the club was being forced out, it was eventually given a lifeline and granted a six-month extension to continue operating at the park.

Tuko said he was hopeful the club would be able to stay at the reserve long-term.

“The club still has some restrictions to navigate, but the city has been supportive, and that’s really helped us move forward with the tournament,” Tuko said.

“By December 31, we will need to find out what’s going on. Will we need to get another extension, or will it all be sorted by then? We don’t know yet, so fingers crossed.”

Mr Irwin said community consultation through the City would be undertaken as part of the assessment process before a final determination is made on the club’s lease at the site, but is hopeful the club will be permitted to stay.

“We support Beach Tennis WA and we are confident the impact of the noise from their events can be managed,” he said.

“We will continue to work with the club to minimise impacts on nearby properties.

“If approval is granted, there is no impediment to Beach Tennis WA remaining at Scarborough Sports and Community Club.”

Fans can catch all the Beach Tennis Open action at the Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre from 6–9 November 2025, running daily from 7am to 8pm, with entry free of charge.

Scarborough Beach will transform into a global sporting arena next weekend as Perth hosts the Facto Financial Beach…

[565
64,63,47,46,588,85,42796,747,45
post-253131","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-north","tag-perth","tag-sport","tag-sports","tag-stirling","tag-tennis","tag-wa-news
["GET
