{"id":253192,"date":"2025-10-31T12:38:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T12:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/253192\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T12:38:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T12:38:12","slug":"police-probe-e-bikes-involved-in-fatal-head-on-that-killed-eight-year-old-boy-on-sunshine-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/253192\/","title":{"rendered":"Police probe e-bikes involved in fatal head-on that killed eight-year-old boy on Sunshine Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An investigation into the death of an eight-year-old boy in a head-on collision involving two e-bikes on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/sunshine-coast\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Sunshine Coast\">Sunshine Coast<\/a> yesterday will probe the type of bikes involved and how fast they were travelling, police say.<\/p>\n<p>An eight-year-old and a 15-year-old boy, both on e-bikes, crashed on the bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek about 3.35pm yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-year-old boy from Mountain Creek was rushed to nearby Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but died from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/053cc05d-ff42-4e68-bd73-3796eb490a45.jpeg\"   alt=\"Queensland Police Inspector Jason Overland.\"\/>Queensland Police Inspector Jason Overland (9News)<\/p>\n<p>The older boy is assisting police with their inquiries.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Inspector Jason Overland said the forensic crash investigation will examine the e-bikes involved and how fast they were travelling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The investigation will determine what they were and that does involve an investigation of how much power they produce,&#8221; Overland said.<\/p>\n<p>He said both riders are believed to have been wearing helmets.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant footage is urged to come forward.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/1f0605da-5384-4e45-9294-22f668e467a0.png\"   alt=\"\"\/>The boy was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital but died from his injuries. (Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n<p>The death comes amid a crackdown on e-bike compliance \ufeffacross Queensland in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>\ufeff&#8221;\ufeffThe Sunshine Coast police are not unique, most police services around Queensland and the country are dealing with these issues that are created by these high-powered e-bikes,&#8221; Overland said.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was a difference between motor-assisted pedal-powered bikes and electric motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>Overland stressed he was speaking generally, and not in relation to yesterday&#8217;s accident, when he said police were trying to educate parents about the risks of electric motorcycles.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to educate people, mums and dads, who want to buy these kids these machines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of these bikes are quite powerful&#8230; some of them have no pedal-power at all\ufeff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re buying your kids a motorcycle, join a club, go racing in a safe environment, they&#8217;re not for the streets\ufeff and they&#8217;re not for bike riders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Three illegal e-bikes were seized across the Sunshine Coast as part of Operation Raptor Wheelie earlier this month.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>Legal e-bikes can be ridden on paths unless otherwise signed, as long as riders obey bicycle rules such as wearing a helmet.<\/p>\n<p>They must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts and be pedal-powered with motor assistance up to 25km\/h.<\/p>\n<p>There are no age limits for riding e-bikes in Queensland.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>\ufeffBikes with motors over 250 watts are illegal, as are throttle-powered bikes without pedals, which are technically electric motorcycles and require registration, insurance and a licence and cannot be ridden on paths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An investigation into the death of an eight-year-old boy in a head-on collision involving two e-bikes on the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":253193,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[43,44,41,39,42,40],"class_list":{"0":"post-253192","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253192","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=253192"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253192\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/253193"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=253192"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=253192"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=253192"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
