{"id":25345,"date":"2025-07-27T06:12:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T06:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/25345\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T06:12:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T06:12:14","slug":"from-libraries-to-living-rooms-how-reading-habits-take-root-in-underserved-spore-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/25345\/","title":{"rendered":"From libraries to living rooms: How reading habits take root in underserved S\u2019pore children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; When volunteer Gareth Ki first sat down to read with a restless young boy, he braced himself for a challenge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But after a few sessions \u2013 and excerpts of a Percy Jackson book \u2013 the boy became more cheerful and sociable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His transformation reflects the impact of a new reading mentorship programme by non-profit group Heartland Literature, part of a growing effort to expand access to books for underserved communities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The National Library Board (NLB) has also expanded its outreach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In August 2024, it launched kidsRead@Home, where volunteers visit children aged four to eight in public rental flats to read to them. Each child receives two books a year, and try their hand at Steam (science, technology, engineering, arts\u00a0and mathematics) activities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">So far, 44 children have joined the programme, with NLB aiming for 100 by the end of 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This builds on kidsRead, a nationwide initiative that began in 2004 and has since benefited nearly 80,000 children. A recent study in 2025 by NLB and the National Institute of Education found that most low-income families own fewer than 20 English books. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Of the 37 families surveyed, 43 per cent never visit public libraries, citing time constraints, fear of damaging books, or unfamiliarity with borrowing rules. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee, principal investigator of the study, said: \u201cA lack of familiarity with library procedures and resources was another potential gap.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To close this gap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/1-5-million-loans-840000-visitors-and-counting-nlbs-mobile-library-keeps-reading-on-the-move?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">NLB\u2019s mobile library Molly<\/p>\n<p><\/a> is visiting more primary schools with children on financial aid, and nursing homes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Ki, 18, a student at SJI International, was a volunteer in Heart\u00adland Literature\u2019s reading initiative, which ran its first four-session cycle in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This first run, which was done together with youth shelter Boys\u2019 Town, involved 13 participants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Volunteers guided the youth through reading excerpts of Percy Jackson in small groups. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/29348ec5dce1313b58cf71f89c50c3cacfe87b64b7e8ced0d9e1cdc9ed6265ca.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-screen tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Non-profit group Heartland Literature held its first reading mentorship programme in 2024, where volunteers read with youth from Boys&#8217; Town to help cultivate a love for reading. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: HEARTLAND LITERATURE<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One boy was initially uninterested and hesitant to read aloud, often glossing over difficult words, said Mr Ki. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But by the end of the programme, with help from Mr Ki, the boy\u2019s confidence had grown, and he could read complex sentences on his own. \u201cWe are not only providing these kids with a space to freely express and enjoy, we are also providing them with tools to make their voices heard,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Heartland Literature\u2019s founder David Ezra said the programme has since expanded into a public run at Bishan Public Library, which starts on Aug 10. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Thirty children will be matched with reading mentors to read Harry Potter And The Philosopher\u2019s Stone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Participants include children from non-profit group New Life Stories, family service centres, and Ministry of Social and Family Development-appointed children\u2019s homes, said Mr Ezra. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He hopes to bring the initiative to more public libraries and eventually serve 80 to 100 children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Ezra recalls a child saying: \u201cI don\u2019t like reading, but I like reading with my reading mentor.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis showed how reading also became about forming and building relationships, and was not just an academic task,\u201d he said, adding that many children went on to read books on their own.<\/p>\n<p>BooksChildren and youthNational Library BoardLibraries<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SINGAPORE &#8211;
