Icelandic filmmaker Hlynur P\u00e1lmason has proven to be uniquely skilled at capturing seemingly small moments and making them feel truly grandiose. While his last effort, \u201cGodland,\u201d took that to extreme, gorgeous ends, his newest film<\/a> narrows the scope down to a single family.<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Love That Remains<\/a>,\u201d P\u00e1lmason follows a family during a complex period of change. The filmmaker\u2019s own children\u00a0(\u00cdda, Gr\u00edmur, and\u00a0\u00deorgils) play the offspring of Anna (Saga Gar\u00f0arsd\u00f3ttir) and her fianc\u00e9, the endearing Magn\u00fas (often shortened to Maggi, and played by\u00a0Sverrir Gu\u00f0nason) as they navigate a slow-speed break-up. The film\u2019s first trailer only gently hints at what\u2019s to come, but in a thrilling and oftentimes oddly fun spirit, as if we\u2019re watching a nature video about a nuclear family.<\/p>\n

In our review from this year\u2019s Cannes<\/a>, critic David Katz wrote, \u201cP\u00e1lmason is an exacting image-maker, giving us crystalline natural panoramas that apportion their beauty carefully, yet his screenplays are deliberately more fragmented, often to their detriment. In\u00a0\u2018Godland\u2019\u00a0and his Cannes Critics\u2019\u00a0Week calling-card\u00a0\u2018A White, White Day,\u2019 this shattered sense of trajectory spiraled into hypnotic bleakness; here, he braids various fragments to relate a time-honored story of love lost, yet the immaculacy of the construction doesn\u2019t help us\u00a0feel\u00a0it as viscerally as he\u2019d like.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film world premiered in the non-competitive Cannes Premiere section in May. Its standout canine star, sheepdog Panda, ultimately won the Palm Dog at the festival<\/a>. The film\u2019s (human) cast includes Saga Gar\u00f0arsd\u00f3ttir (\u201cWoman at War\u201d), Sverrir Gudnason (\u201cBorg vs. McEnroe\u201d), \u00cdda Mekk\u00edn Hlynsd\u00f3ttir (\u201cGodland\u201d), \u00deorgils Hlynsson (\u201cNest\u201d), and Gr\u00edmur Hlynsson (\u201cNest\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Love That Remains\u201d was selected in August as Iceland\u2019s entry to the Best International Feature Film category for the 98th Academy Awards. P\u00e1lmason\u2019s previous film, \u201cGodland,\u201d premiered in\u00a0Cannes\u00a0Un Certain Regard in 2022 and went on to be shortlisted as\u00a0Iceland\u2019s candidate for the 2023 Oscars. While it did not make the final nomination cut, the film was critically beloved, including here on IndieWire<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Janus Films will release \u201cThe Love That Remains\u201d in theaters on Friday, January 30, 2026.
