{"id":254616,"date":"2025-11-01T03:40:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T03:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/254616\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T03:40:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T03:40:20","slug":"warren-tredrea-was-the-powers-premiership-captain-but-has-now-been-booted-from-its-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/254616\/","title":{"rendered":"Warren Tredrea was the Power&#8217;s premiership captain, but has now been booted from its board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2004, the Port Adelaide Football Club stood at the summit of the AFL world \u2014 and standing at the top of the club was Warren Tredrea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t seem too real out here,&#8221; he told a TV interviewer following the final siren on the last Saturday in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The venue was the MCG, the occasion was the grand final, and Tredrea \u2014 who was captain that day \u2014 was basking in the glow of victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Power had <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2004-09-25\/power-surge-to-maiden-afl-flag\/558888\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/558888\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beaten Brisbane by 40 points to claim what was its first<\/a>, and remains its only, AFL premiership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We knew our best was good enough, and today we proved it,&#8221;  Tredrea said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That September triumph 21 years ago cemented Tredrea&#8217;s place as a Port Adelaide icon and the brightest star of the club&#8217;s AFL era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But now, the club that continues to describe Tredrea as one of its greatest-ever players has dismissed him from its board of directors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;After exhausting all reasonable avenues for resolution, the board determined that Mr Tredrea&#8217;s continuation as a director was not in the best interests of the club,&#8221; it said yesterday in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Former Port Adelaide footballer Warren Tredrea at Alberton Oval.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1033578bac6ca43f53412b1c8b26c2fb\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tredrea at Alberton after he secured the position of member-elected director. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The decision followed a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-25\/port-adelaide-to-review-warren-tredreas-position-on-board\/105461272\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105461272\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formal governance review over &#8220;recent public content&#8221; shared by Tredrea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The review was launched in June following an ABC story that reported the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-25\/warren-tredrea-instagram-post-criticised-by-jewish-council\/105436964\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105436964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concerns of the Jewish Council of Australia about one of Tredrea&#8217;s social media posts, which featured claims made by a guest<\/a> on the former footballer&#8217;s new podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In response, Tredrea issued a statement staunchly defending his podcast and his reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The controversy has not been the only one to involve Tredrea in recent months and years.<\/p>\n<p>A place in the Power&#8217;s pantheon<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In its statement on Friday, the Power said its decision to remove Tredrea from its board was purely a &#8220;governance matter relating to its expectations of club directors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is not, and should never be interpreted as, a reflection on Warren Tredrea&#8217;s extraordinary contribution to Port Adelaide as a player,&#8221; the club said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Warren Tredrea is a Premiership captain, club champion, and one of the greatest players to represent the club. (Morne de Klerk: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That legacy is an impressive one \u2014 during 255 AFL games Tredrea kicked 549 goals, and was a four-time All-Australian, a four-time Power best and fairest winner, and an eight-time club leading goal-kicker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Port Adelaide Football Club has been around for over 140 years,&#8221; then-Power coach Matthew Primus said upon Tredrea&#8217;s retirement in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve no doubt he&#8217;ll go down as one of the greatest players this club has ever produced.&#8221;From Power to pundit<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After his retirement, Tredrea pivoted to a career in media, with roles at radio stations Triple M Adelaide and FiveAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He also worked as a sports presenter at Channel Nine, which is where his career reached a crossroads \u2014 in January 2022 he <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-27\/warren-tredrea-hopes-to-claim-millions-in-damages\/101584952\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was dismissed from his $192,500-a-year job<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In response, he launched a lawsuit, claiming the network unfairly terminated his contract because he refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Warren Tredrea channel nine\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/11d2a571c613904ab6fe27b05542b391\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Warren Tredrea worked at Channel Nine as a nightly TV sports presenter. (Supplied: Instagram)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But in March 2024, the Federal Court dismissed the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, Justice Geoffrey Kennett <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-03-14\/warren-tredrea-federal-court-decision-on-contract-termination\/103586732\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103586732\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found that while there may have been a case had Tredrea been terminated solely on the grounds of a breach of COVID policy, the dismissal was supported on other grounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In his judgement, Justice Kennett reflected on Nine&#8217;s concerns over reputational damage caused by comments Tredrea made on FiveAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Mr Tredrea was a controversial figure who was discussed in other media outlets in a manner that was unwelcome to Channel 9,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Rather than having the studied neutrality of a newsreader, he was associated in public discourse with an unpopular viewpoint on an issue apt to excite strong emotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It did not help that the viewpoint with which he was associated was diametrically opposed to the public position of Channel 9 itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Legal problems escalate<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tredrea filed an appeal against the court&#8217;s decision \u2014 but he later lost and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-05\/warren-tredrea-ordered-to-pay-channel-nine-legal-costs\/105738558\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105738558\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was subsequently ordered to reimburse the news network for its legal fees relating to the appeal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this year, Tredrea said he had &#8220;fully discharged his liability&#8221; to pay costs by presenting Nine &#8220;with a promissory note&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have not seen or been presented with any material facts or evidence that shows that a promissory note is not legal tender and cannot, once delivered, discharge a financial obligation or liability to pay a debt, and I believe sincerely that none exists,&#8221; he stated in an affidavit submitted to the court this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Warren Tredrea walks outside court\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/989a7393ed0fbaf9f59e4f7cfdca5c34\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tredrea after losing his unfair dismissal case. (Daniel Litjens)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the same document, Tredrea described himself as a &#8220;private man&#8221; who was &#8220;not an entity, legal person, person, citizen, resident, name, trust, estate, government entity or employee \u2026 or any form of creature of statute&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Outside court, Tredrea was asked whether he recognised himself as a citizen of Australia and replied, &#8220;Absolutely, I do&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am a citizen and they&#8217;ve already been paid from a legal form of payment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But in September, the Federal Court ordered Tredrea to pay $149,000 to cover legal costs that were accumulated by his ex-employer, ruling &#8220;the provision of a promissory note made by him was not effective to constitute payment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Podcast in the spotlight<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Months before that outcome, Tredrea launched a podcast, Ballsy, which is described on Spotify as a forum for &#8220;fearless guests \u2026 from sports legends and business titans to politicians, health and wellness visionaries&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They have included various high-profile figures including current and former MPs and athletes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in casual business attire sits on a couch and talks into a podcast microphone\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/62197dbab8a44315f211b6b93f0ceb29\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tredrea this year launched his podcast Ballsy. (Facebook)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In an episode that was posted in May, Tredrea featured a guest introduced as British Army veteran AJ Roberts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several short video clips from the discussion were posted on Tredrea&#8217;s Instagram account \u2014 including one in which Roberts makes statements about Israel, which he says is a &#8220;fake state&#8221; that was behind the creation of terror group ISIS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Roberts also said Zionists were responsible for &#8220;controlling World War II&#8221;, and also claimed the 9\/11 terrorist attacks were carried out by Mossad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Mossad created ISIS with Barack Obama so ISIS actually stands for Israeli Specialist Intelligence Service,&#8221; Roberts told Tredrea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In response, the Jewish Council of Australia criticised the post, saying it was &#8220;deeply disturbed by the amplification of far-right antisemitic conspiracy theories in this Instagram post and podcast episode&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, executive officer Max Kaiser said that while it was possible to make &#8220;entirely legitimate&#8221; criticism of the Israeli state and Zionism, the claim that &#8220;Zionists controlled World War II&#8221; amounted to &#8220;a form of Holocaust denial&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He criticised other comments by Tredrea&#8217;s guest in the same post, saying it included &#8220;bizarre&#8221; theories &#8220;about satanic rituals, chakras and ley lines which are way off the deep end and do nothing to illuminate current events&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC contacted both AJ Roberts and Tredrea for comment. In a social media post, the latter defended his position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I unequivocally condemn war and genocide, and seek only to share other perspectives of what has been a very one-way reported narrative in the mainstream media,&#8221; Tredrea wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am not in any way, shape or form, an antisemite, and consider it defamatory for anyone to accuse me as such.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Following the ABC&#8217;s reporting, Port Adelaide initiated a formal governance review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Directors and officials of the club are entitled to their personal views, however, there are concerns that recent content published is in breach of these standards,&#8221; Power chairman David Koch said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"David Koch and Warren Tredrea shake hands.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/67c2892fe72d8680c07529798b02e4d8\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Power chair David Koch and Warren Tredrea shake hands after the latter secured the position of member-elected director in February 2024.
