Queensland’s premier has opened the door to tax reform, saying there are several state taxes he would like to reduce or scrap completely.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the ABC, David Crisafulli reflected on one year in power, reiterating the big four crises he campaigned on remain his priorities for the next 12 months and beyond.<\/p>\n

The Sunshine State’s first LNP premier in almost a decade has been resolute in his desire to ignite Queensland’s economy.<\/p>\n

Queensland government’s first year in office<\/a><\/p>\n

After a year under David Crisafulli’s leadership, those in the know have weighed in on how they believe the government is tracking on key issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Crisafulli highlighted employers’ payroll taxes as an impediment to growth.<\/p>\n

“There are a number of taxes that I believe, fundamentally, that I’d love to see either reduced or got rid of entirely,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I look at payroll tax, and I see that as a disincentive for people to put people on.<\/p>\n

“But it’s a big part of our budget, and we have to make sure that we also run a responsible operation.”<\/p>\n

Political commentators this week highlighted the LNP’s small target pre-election strategy<\/a> as a barrier to meaningful progress and success.<\/p>\n

But Mr Crisafulli said the big four crises of youth crime, health, housing, and cost of living remain both his focus and Queenslanders’.<\/p>\n

“I still believe they are the big four issues in people’s lives,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I do believe we’ve made progress on them, but I also believe we’ve got a long way to go.”<\/p>\n

Some metrics have further to go than others. While Mr Crisafulli and his team harnessed white-hot community anger about youth crime for their campaign, they also consistently used ambulance ramping to lambaste Labor.<\/p>\n

But figures for July showed ramping has hit a new record high of 47.8 per cent<\/a> under the LNP government.<\/p>\n

Mr Crisafulli vowed the statistic will dip below 30 per cent by the next election, as promised.<\/p>\n

“Our commitment deliberately was for the entirety of the term because we knew it would take time,” he said.<\/p>\n

Also promised is one million new homes by 2044, or 50,000 annually.<\/p>\n

The premier deferred questions on how many have been built this year to local councils, but said the foundation being laid now meant that goal would be far exceeded.<\/p>\n

“By the back end of that commitment, 20 years, we’re going to be delivering a lot more than 50,000. It’s a bell curve deliberately,” Mr Crisafulli said.<\/p>\n

The Quad in Queensland<\/p>\n

One more specific goal for the next 12 months is to bring the Quad meeting between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States \u2014 including US President Donald Trump \u2014 to Queensland’s shores.<\/p>\n

Asked if he’s a fan of the American leader’s style, Mr Crisafulli said he’s “a fan of the US”.<\/p>\n

“If we were to get the Quad to come here, the opportunity for Queensland and long-term Queensland jobs, I do believe it would be something very, very special,” he said.<\/p>\n

When asked if his firebrand deputy Jarrod Bleijie had a “Trumpian'”style Mr Crisafulli said: “He’s a strong, conviction politician who has delivered what he said he’s going to do.”<\/p>\n

The media-savvy Broadwater MP declined to give himself a grade on his performance, but revealed “the volume of things you have to deal with” as premier had surprised him most.<\/p>\n

“But it’s been a genuine privilege,” Mr Crisafulli said. “It’s been a big year, but it’s been an enjoyable one.”<\/p>\n
