Lily Allen has something of a history of pushing buttons with her Halloween costumes<\/a>, and this year was no exception. The singer showed off a full Madeline costume on TikTok on Halloween, wearing a pastel blue coatdress, red necktie, straw hat, and Mary Jane shoes while strutting down a hallway to Cardi B\u2019s \u201cMagnet.\u201d Her caption: \u201cWho IS Madeline though, actually?\u201d A cute literary nod on its surface \u2014 unless you\u2019ve heard the breakup track she released last week with the exact same name.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know, \u201cMadeline\u201d<\/a> has been one of the most talked-about songs on Allen\u2019s new album, West End Girl<\/a>, which chronicles the breakdown of her marriage<\/a> to actor David Harbour. In it, she sings about an arrangement to sleep with other people \u2014 one she says only worked until her partner got involved with someone he actually knew. \u201cWe had an arrangement \/ Be discreet and don\u2019t be blatant \/ There had to be payment \/ It had to be with strangers \/ But you\u2019re not a stranger, Madeline,\u201d she sings on the track. The album dropped October 24, and Allen confirmed that \u201cMadeline\u201d is not one woman, but a \u201cfictional construct\u201d made up of \u201cmultiple individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harbour hasn\u2019t publicly addressed the cheating interpretations. Earlier this year, the Stranger Things star told GQ, \u201cI\u2019m protective of the people and the reality of my life,\u201d adding that responding to rumors<\/a> was \u201cbased on hysterical hyperbole,\u201d so there\u2019s that. The pair married in 2020 and separated in late 2024.<\/p>\n

While West End Girl is broadly being embraced as a divorced-mom anthems album \u2014 Allen wrote it in 10 days while parenting two teens and processing the breakup \u2014 the Madeline costume makes it clear she hasn\u2019t moved into the silent-healing phase just yet.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time she\u2019s used Halloween as commentary, either. In 2014, she attended Kate Hudson\u2019s party dressed as Dr. Luke during the height of Kesha\u2019s legal battle against the producer. She wore teal medical scrubs with a stethoscope and a name badge that read \u201cDr. Luke, Gynecology Department,\u201d a detail that sparked backlash as photos resurfaced online amidst her divorce from Harbour. Allen later said she was mocking him, not Kesha \u2014 but even supporters have admitted it was a choice that hasn\u2019t aged smoothly, and that is putting it politely.<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s not the only ex sending messages through costumes this year. Kayla Nicole<\/a> went viral for her Toni Braxton look, widely read as a post-Travis Kelce jab at Taylor Swift \u2014 proving Halloween is increasingly becoming a breakup subgenre of its own.<\/p>\n
