But artist and curator Kirsha Kaechele admits that in her marriage, she&#8217;s happy to be less than equal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s complicated, says the US-born wife of uber-wealthy David Walsh, a mathematician, professional gambler and creator of Hobart&#8217;s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On the one hand, the feminist in Kirsha finds it irksome to be pigeonholed as &#8220;Mrs MONA&#8221; or &#8220;David Walsh&#8217;s wife&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On the other, David&#8217;s power means she can &#8220;get away with more&#8221; in her creative pursuits \u2014 and it just suits her.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two people is flamboyant costumes sitting on a couch.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/91c42a12c5502511658ed5e10c2d7008\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kirsha and David on their wedding day, held at MONA in 2014. Maybe that&#8217;s really wrong, but it&#8217;s how I feel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Art connected them. It was 2007 when David sidled up to Kirsha at a posh art show in Basel, Switzerland, sporting torn jeans, a &#8220;F*** Terrorists&#8221; T-shirt and an Australian swagger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was impressed,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was like, &#8216;Who are you? Does this count for art?'&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But it does tend to come around and I realise, &#8216;Yes, this is art.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some in the established art world, however, remain unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have had to deal with these serious art world critics who just tell me that I&#8217;m not an artist, I&#8217;m not relevant and I&#8217;m not making art,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That hurts, Kirsha says \u2014 and spurs her on.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;&#8217;An exotic, alienating experience&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As the cameras are set up to film Kirsha&#8217;s interview, she&#8217;s busy directing the look of every element of the room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The yellow book under the model sailing ship has to go, she tells her staff. It detracts from her yellow jacket. And the blue side table? (Australian Story: Beau Molloy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So, it&#8217;s no surprise that I do installation art,&#8221; Kirsha says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Tania is unpredictable and passionate, Kirsha&#8217;s late father, Lloyd, was calm. A scientist \u2014 he worked as an aerospace engineer with the RAND Corporation, &#8220;the epicentre of the American war complex&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The family moved to Guam, a US island territory in Micronesia, when Kirsha was five. It was an experience both exotic and alienating. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I had to learn how to connect with people that saw me as different,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tania accepts it was hard for her daughter, but says: &#8220;It made her very brave and able to go out into the world in a very unique way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kirsha knows some think her father was a CIA agent, but she doesn&#8217;t believe it. One reason: he took a lot of LSD as part of RAND&#8217;s exploration of the uses of the drug, something she believes is incompatible with the life of a spy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kirsha has some knowledge of psychedelics. Lloyd died when she was 17, causing the bright student to question the predictable university path. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>A psychic told me to go to New Orleans<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2000, a psychic told her to go to New Orleans. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She found the answer in the art scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was so mesmerised by their creative world, by their subculture,&#8221; she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;d been with New Agers and hippies. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She bought six derelict houses in a rundown part of New Orleans and converted them into art spaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She spray-painted one entirely white. Prestigious publications such as the New York Times came knocking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There was a buzz,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Hiding in a bunker called MONA<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The buzz followed her when she moved to Hobart \u2014 but not in a good way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The derelict properties had a form of tax, known as liens, attached to them. Her ego was bruised and she felt a loss of identity, cringing at being considered David&#8217;s &#8220;arm-candy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But she was in love and wanted a child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just really wanted to be a mother, and I really just had to do it,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2015, the couple welcomed a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court rules on Ladies Lounge<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kirsha sashayed into the tribunal room last year with a sea of female supporters, all in navy suits and red lipstick, all channelling the dancers from the music video to Robert Palmer&#8217;s classic 1980s hit Simply Irresistible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing into NSW man Jason Lau&#8217;s complaint that his exclusion from the Ladies Lounge was discriminatory on the basis of gender \u2014 and Kirsha was thrilled to be there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Women in blue suits gathered on the street.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/30029543477f91082df5ae7a4df7d205\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Ladies Lounge entourage leaving the Supreme Court after an appeal hearing in September last year. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just think it was perfect that it landed where it landed,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With the people and not locked up in a museum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Zavros says Kirsha &#8220;spun it into her web of performance and it became art, it became theatre&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The world&#8217;s media lapped it up. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kirsha says the Ladies Lounge had a dual purpose: to give women a place to relax together and to show men how women have felt &#8220;for millennia&#8221; when excluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[For men to be] turned away at the concierge desk is the experience, is the work,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-04-09\/mona-loses-bid-to-exclude-men-from-ladies-lounge\/103687390\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103687390\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost the discrimination case<\/a>, which meant more publicity \u2014 exactly what she&#8217;d hoped for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was a dream,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-09-27\/mona-ladies-lounge-decision-tascat-supreme-court-decision\/104403720\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104403720\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Supreme Court would later rule in her favour<\/a>, but not before the great Picasso scandal broke.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-07-12\/picasso-estate-responds-to-faked-mona-picasso-artworks\/104091140\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Picasso estate responds to MONA&#8217;s faked artworks<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Picasso estate contacted MONA to express its regret about its faked Picassos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Rather than let men into the lounge, Kirsha closed it and put the Picassos in MONA&#8217;s female toilets, a place where the law allows discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The gall of exhibiting such precious art, notably by a renowned misogynist, in the loos gained more publicity \u2014 and the probing eye of Picasso&#8217;s estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Turns out, the Picassos were fake, painted by Kirsha. (Supplied: MONA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But, says her friend Muldoon: &#8220;Fake Picassos in the toilets \u2014 this is just grand wickedness and it&#8217;s brilliant. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I felt hatred was preventing forward movement,&#8221; Kirsha says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And I thought, &#8216;What better way to melt hatred than through art?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2023, she invited loggers and conservationists to MONA for a Forest Economics Congress, plying the disparate guests with art, tequila and workshops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We should get smashed with someone who doesn&#8217;t agree with us so we can actually hash it out,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was a wild three days but reviews are mixed about what was achieved. But Landcare Tasmania CEO Peter Stronach says Kirsha has facilitated conversations between the two opposing groups, and that&#8217;s no small feat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With her position, with her creative brain, with her influence of power to talk with all sides, I think she&#8217;s perfectly situated to be able to make some serious change,&#8221; Stronach says.<\/p>\n<p>The darling of the art world?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Exactly what Kirsha&#8217;s next artistic project will be is unclear, but lately she&#8217;s been dabbling with creating characters based on her extraordinary life. Kirsha lets him loose to mock her desire to be welcomed into that club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;She is darling of the art world?&#8221; Hans\/Kirsha asks incredulously in a thick German accent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Nein, nein. I think she&#8217;s the nightmare of the art world. No-one takes her very seriously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She does it well.
