The eternal debate surfaced with unexpected intensity during Cori Gauff’s press conference before her participation in the 2025 WTA Finals. The current world No. 3 didn’t hold back in assessing the implications of having multiple Grand Slam champions in the same year in women’s tennis and the equality at the elite level, compared to Sinner and Alcaraz’s dominance in the ATP circuit.

For years, women’s tennis was undervalued due to the difficulty of having recognizable figures capable of competing for glory in each major tournament. That has drastically changed, now there is a considerable roster of players who consistently reach the decisive rounds in every significant event, making match outcomes unpredictable. Cori Gauff is one of them and she spoke up in favor of women’s tennis, even if it meant sending a controversial message regarding the ATP circuit, before embarking on her journey in the 2025 WTA Finals.

“It’s fantastic that we’ve had four different Grand Slam champions this year; it’s great news for women’s tennis. It reflects how competitive we all have been and broadens the candidates for titles in important tournaments,” said the American, who, along with Keys, Anisimova, and Sabalenka, form the quartet of winners. It’s a scenario opposite to what’s seen in men’s tennis, with Sinner and Alcaraz dividing the last eight events in this category.

Gauff finds little excitement and interest in Sinner and Alcaraz’s dominance, compared to the unpredictability of women’s tennis

Perhaps that’s why Gauff stirred controversy by comparing the current state of women’s tennis with men’s. “What we’ve done makes the sport more exciting. Carlos and Jannik are doing impressive things, but there’s always talk nowadays about the need for a third player to disrupt their rivalry. I think what we have in women’s tennis currently is more fun,” she remarked.

“The feeling on the ATP circuit is that neither of them can lose, whereas we always have very tough matches, and it’s impossible to predict who will win quarterfinals or semifinals. There are more chances for something unexpected to happen in the WTA circuit, which makes it more intriguing to me,” conveyed Cori Gauff, who has sparked a major debate with this reflection, resonating greatly on social media and among tennis experts. What do you think?
