\nSouth Dakota State begins its latest era under the guidance of first-year head coach Bryan Petersen<\/a> on Monday, Nov. 3, as the Jackrabbits take part in The Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon. The Jacks take on Merrimack in the event finale slated to tip off at 8 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.\u00a0<\/p>\n

SDSU looks to continue its program success it’s enjoyed since turning the page into the 2010s. Over the past 15 seasons, the Jackrabbits rank among the top 30 programs in Division I basketball in overall wins (339-155 record). SDSU’s winning percentage of .686 is the 24th best among all men’s teams in that span.<\/p>\n

Petersen takes the reins over from previous head coach Eric Henderson. Petersen was on staff during Henderson’s six seasons in which SDSU went 129-60 with four Summit League regular season championships, as well as a pair of conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. The Jacks’ win percentage and total wins among all programs nationally in Division I during the six-year span rank 34th and 43rd, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Petersen makes his return to the head coaching role. He previously spent six years leading Kirkwood Community College at the NJCAA Division II level. The Eagles were 157-38 and won two national titles in his tenure that lasted from 2013-19.<\/p>\n

The 2025-26 Jackrabbits benefit from nine returners from a team that won 20 games a season ago. Kalen Garry<\/a>, a junior guard, is a Preseason All-Summit League First Team selection. One of two returning Summit League players that claimed honorable mention All-Summit status last season, Garry averaged 13.2 points in league play.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Four other Jacks played in Yellow and Blue last season in Matthew Mors<\/a>, Joe Sayler<\/a>, Jaden Jackson<\/a> and Damon Wilkinson<\/a>. Mors paces SDSU with 100 games played. Sayler is the Jacks’ leading returning scorer having averaged 12.7 points per contest. Jackson competed in all 32 games a season ago and Wilkinson appeared in 27.<\/p>\n

Merrimack went\u00a018-15 last season. Head coach Joe Gallo is in his 10th year leading the Warriors. Merrimack was picked seventh in the MAAC this season after going 14-6 last season and finishing second.\u00a0<\/p>\n
