{"id":25809,"date":"2025-07-27T20:56:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T20:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/25809\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T20:56:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T20:56:14","slug":"farmers-seek-direct-partnerships-with-meal-kit-and-ready-made-meal-makers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/25809\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers seek direct partnerships with meal kit and ready-made meal makers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Boxes of produce fly out the door at a food distribution centre in Sydney&#8217;s west, with a conveyer belt whisking away packed meal kits in a high-tech warehouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The meal kits typically include portioned ingredients such as fresh vegetables, meat, sauces, spices and a recipe card with step-by-step instructions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">HelloFresh was one of the first entrants into the Australian meal kit market, now estimated to be worth more than $1 billion a year, with new brands continuing to enter the competitive space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Chief executive Tom Rutledge said the company&#8217;s new distribution centre opened in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We handle 250 tonnes of fruit and veg every week through this facility,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We get that from a network of suppliers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New market opportunities for farmers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The rising popularity of meal kits in Australia has created new opportunities for farmers to bypass traditional supply chains and sell their produce directly to those companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bundaberg-based farming operation Sunripe has diversified its business by growing tomatoes, capsicums and zucchinis for HelloFresh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Director Luke De Paoli said prices were locked in for 12 months at a time, in contrast to the more common week-to-week negotiations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Young man with a short brown beard wearing a cap smiling in front of a crop field.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2527dd872372cdf920e674b634a90e85\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sunripe director Luke De Paoli says fixed pricing helps with long-term planning. (ABC Landline)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We can take a different spec to what is required by supermarkets because we know the intended use of those items [in recipes],&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Essentially, every carrot in our supply chain has someone&#8217;s name on it and an intended use.
