People in Victoria’s east were left confused and fascinated after a streak of white light shot through the sky on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
A suspected meteor streaked across the Gippsland sky just after 4:30pm in an event that experts have labelled as unusual.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Monash University planetary geologist Rachel Kirby said the incident was still being investigated, but the trajectory and speed of the flying object made her “fairly confident” it was a meteor and not space junk.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The speed at which it’s moving is too fast for space junk,” Dr Kirby said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“And the fact that you saw it during the day suggests it’s actually quite a large object.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘It was on fire’<\/p>\n
Sarah Devine lives in Golden Beach and was enjoying the warm weather on her deck when a bright light caught her attention.<\/p>\n
“It was like it was on fire,” Ms Devine said.<\/p>\n
Ms Devine and her husband were shocked by the sight and sound of the meteor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We just saw something flashing,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It kind of came across the sky and straight down, and it left like a vapour trail \u2026 we were like \u2014 what was that? And then about a minute later, we heard the sonic boom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ms Devine said the boom left her trying to figure out what happened.<\/p>\n
“We were running around the house looking at the sky, thinking, what on earth was that? Are we under attack?” she said.<\/p>\n
“It was just a really beautiful day.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Just something really unusual to happen, and we’re just lucky enough to see.”<\/p>\n
