The NBA<\/a> has fined Philadelphia<\/a> centre Joel Embiid<\/a> $50,000 USD ($76,380 AUD) for making what the league determined to be a lewd gesture during a game against Boston on Saturday (AEDT).<\/p>\n

The fine was announced on Monday by James Jones, the league’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations.<\/p>\n

Embiid scored while getting fouled with seven minutes and eight seconds remaining in the first quarter against the Celtics, then made a chopping gesture toward his groin.<\/p>\n

Embiid has now been fined at least four times in the past for making the gesture – $75,000 ($114,547 AUD) in December 2024 (a game in which he made multiple gestures), $35,000 ($53,455 AUD) in October 2023 and $25,000 ($38,182 AUD) in January 2023.<\/p>\n

Embiid then took to X on Monday morning, reposting the NBA’s statement and criticising a supposed double standard.<\/p>\n

“Ya’ll better start fining the refs for doing the ‘lewd’, ‘blocking foul’ gesture since I’m not allowed to do it,” he wrote.<\/p>\n

Embiid then posted a GIF that showed a referee calling a blocking foul and tagged the NBA.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia lost Saturday’s game, 109-108.<\/p>\n
