intentionally causing injury and affray over the March 3 attack<\/a> at Bendigo Marketplace.<\/p>\nVision of the assault was widely circulated on social media, drawing the ire of the Central Victorian community and Premier Jacinta Allan, who labelled the attack as “disgusting”.<\/p>\n
The teenager spent two weeks in remand before being released on strict bail conditions, including a social media ban.<\/p>\n
He fronted a court on Monday after pleading guilty in August to affray and recklessly causing injury offences for three violent attacks in February and March.<\/p>\n
The children’s court was told the teenager “king-hit” the guard in the back of the head during the March brawl, before punching him in the face and stepping on his head with such force that a shoe print was left in his face.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Trieu Huynh called out the “obscene, racist taunts” the teenager hurled at the guard.<\/p>\n
The court heard that 22 members of the public called police during the incident, which caused hundreds of customers to hide inside shops.<\/p>\n
The court also heard the teen was also involved in unprovoked attacks in February, including at the Marketplace, where he punched and kicked a legally blind 22-year-old who was sitting on the ground.<\/p>\n
He was also sentenced for driving without a licence in January.<\/p>\n

The court heard the teenager had an intellectual disability, but had recently cut ties with the friends involved in the attacks.<\/p>\n
He now has a supportive relationship with his family and has started work.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Huynh said the teen had taken part in several community programs over the past eight months, had accepted responsibility for his offending, and expressed remorse to his victims.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Huynh asked the teenager if he understood the impact of the offending and the broader attention Bendigo had received as a result.<\/p>\n
“Concerns were rightly raised in relation to the obscene, racist taunts directed at [the victim] and that his turban was pulled off,” Magistrate Huynh said.<\/p>\n
“It’s not unreasonable to conclude, given the level of attention and outrage this incident received and caused, that the entire community was victim to this offending.”<\/p>\n
Magistrate Huynh noted the teen had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had no prior criminal history.<\/p>\n
“Detention was an environment that you found difficult and seems to have had the appropriate deterrent effect on you,” he said.<\/p>\n
