Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner has downplayed Mitch Marsh\u2019s involvement in Australia\u2019s Ashes campaign, but also backed in his side\u2019s depth should the allrounder be handed a surprise Test recall.<\/p>\n

The 46-Test veteran\u2019s name has been thrown into the selection mix as the Aussies mull the make-up of their batting line-up, with former selector Greg Chappell and England great David Lloyd both endorsing Marsh as a potential opening candidate.<\/p>\n

With just over a month to go before the Scorchers\u2019 Big Bash season opener, Marsh\u2019s involvement with the Test side could come at the expense of the domestic Twenty20 campaign.<\/p>\n

But after Marsh has cheekily played down his own involvement in the Ashes ahead of the first Test beginning in Perth<\/a> in just over two weeks\u2019 time, Turner played a similarly straight bat in response to questions about his availability.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s gonna be at the pub, isn\u2019t he?\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I will say on the Mitch Marsh one is: Keep asking him questions about it in interviews, because he\u2019s providing some good entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Should Marsh or any of Turner\u2019s other Scorcher teammates be called into the Australia squad during the Ashes, which will run concurrently with the Big Bash, the Perth captain said he was confident his side had the depth to deal with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs is the modern game, there\u2019s so much cricket happening all over the world and as a squad we\u2019ve got to be pretty adaptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a couple of guys who we can throw into that same basket who are probably on the fringes of or in the Australian Test squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel like we\u2019ve got a lot of contingencies to cover those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jhye Richardson bowled eight overs and finished with 0-30 for Fremantle at Premier Cricket level on the weekend \u2014 his first match in 10 months after surgery on his troublesome shoulder \u2014 and Turner said it was good to see his state teammate back going through his paces.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be the first to admit he\u2019s been frustrated at the time it\u2019s taken him to get back to competitive cricket, but we\u2019ve seen him come out the end of that tunnel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJhye Richardson playing cricket is good for West Australian cricket fans, it\u2019s good for Australian cricket fans, it\u2019s good for me as a teammate, but we know it\u2019ll take him a few weeks to get back to his best.<\/p>\n
