Westpac has built an \u201cIntelligence Layer\u201d that it will make accessible to the entire bank over the next year.<\/p>\n

The \u201cintelligence layer\u201d appears to be an enterprise-wide data and AI platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n
iTnews understands it was built in-house, and has some integrations to Azure and Snowflake.<\/p>\n
Chief executive Anthony Miller cited the \u201cWestpac Intelligence Layer\u201d as an example of the \u201centerprise-wide mindset\u201d that the bank is taking with AI adoption.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the bank has been contacted for comment on the technical architecture and foundations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re moving at pace and recently launched the Westpac intelligence layer, which draws on the enormous data and insights across the company to drive faster, safer and more proactive decisions,\u201d Miller said at the bank\u2019s annual results.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have prioritised using the layer in consumer to support our focus on growing proprietary lending. It is already giving our home finance managers better insights to deliver faster, more personalised service.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really excited about what we will achieve as we broaden this intelligence layer and roll it out across the bank in the next 12 months\u201d.<\/p>\n
In an accompanying slide deck, Westpac said the intelligence layer brings together data from 251 systems into a single place.<\/p>\n
The layer is also where bank staff can deploy AI models to try to understand and \u201canticipate\u201d customers’ needs; and access \u201cconversational intelligence support\u201d.<\/p>\n
Miller said that AI \u201crepresents a significant opportunity\u201d for the bank \u201cto improve the way our people work as well as the quality of their work, to help us provide better, more consistent service to our customers\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re embracing new generative and agentic AI capabilities while also continuing to use traditional AI tools like machine learning and advanced analytics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are helping us automate tasks and modernise our technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s also giving our people more time back and providing bankers with more insights to serve customers better\u201d.<\/p>\n
Miller said the bank is focused on scaling \u201cproven solutions\u201d in the AI and data space.<\/p>\n
