The Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa is designed to help graduates live, work, and study further in Australia while building their career.<\/p>\n

This visa also opens doors to other migration options, including employer-sponsored or general skilled migration, making it a crucial part of your post-study journey.<\/p>\n

What is a Temporary Graduate 485 Visa?<\/p>\n

The Subclass 485 visa allows recent graduates from Australian institutions to remain in Australia temporarily to gain practical work experience or continue studying. It provides a bridge from study to professional employment, giving graduates the chance to develop skills, network, and explore long-term migration pathways.<\/p>\n

Applicants must meet:<\/p>\n

The Australian study requirement
\nEnglish language ability
\nHealth and character requirements<\/p>\n

This visa has two main streams:<\/p>\n

Post-Higher Education Work Stream (PHEW Stream)<\/p>\n

For graduates with at least a Bachelor\u2019s degree, Master\u2019s, or PhD
\nDuration varies by qualification: Bachelor\u2019s\/Master\u2019s (coursework) \u2013 up to 2 years, Master\u2019s (research)\/PhD \u2013 up to 3 years
\nAge limit: typically 35, with exceptions for research graduates and Hong Kong passport holders
\nA second PHEW visa is available for graduates who studied in regional Australia and lived there for at least 2 years; the duration depends on the regional area<\/p>\n

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream (PVEW Stream)<\/p>\n

For graduates with an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification
\nMust nominate an occupation on the Medium-Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) closely related to their qualification
\nMust provide evidence of a positive skills assessment
\nDuration: 18 months (longer for eligible Hong Kong passport holders)
\nWhat is the Australian Study Requirement?<\/p>\n

To qualify for a 485 visa, you must have completed:<\/p>\n

A CRICOS-registered course
\nAll course requirements successfully completed
\nStudy in English
\nAt least two academic years (92 weeks) of study
\nA minimum of 16 calendar months in Australia
\nHold a valid Student visa while studying<\/p>\n

This ensures that applicants have genuinely engaged in Australian education and are prepared for the workforce.<\/p>\n

Application Costs for 485 Visa<\/p>\n

As of 1 July 2025:<\/p>\n

Main Applicant: $2,300
\nDependent over 18: $1,150 each
\nDependent under 18: $580 each
\nSecond PHEW visa: Main applicant $905, dependents over 18 $455, dependents under 18 $230
