A man has died after being pulled from the water at a popular surf break near Margaret River in WA’s South-West.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Emergency services responded to reports of a surfer in distress in the water around midday near Gnarabup Beach in Prevelly, about 270 kilometres south of Perth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It is believed he drowned at the Bombie surf break, which is located between Gnarabup and Main Break at Surfers Point, where the Margaret River Pro is held as part of the World Surf League tour.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Bombie is an offshore reef break which involves a long paddle out and is known for being much larger than it appears from the shore.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police say the man received first aid but he could not be saved and was declared dead at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Margaret River Police acting officer-in-charge Nathan Eley said he was grateful to those who offered support.<\/p>\n
“I just put my heartfelt thanks out to the members of the community who came to assist,” he said.<\/p>\n
“They helped to bring him back to land and will give the family some closure on what happened.”<\/p>\n
‘Unpredictable’ break<\/p>\n
Resident and surfer Peter witnessed the incident from shore, saying the spot was a “notoriously difficult” break.<\/p>\n
“It’s unpredictable because some waves are makeable and some waves are un-makeable,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“You would be a very experienced surfer to go out there.”<\/p>\n
Offshore winds meant large swells built throughout the day, starting at around 1.5 meters earlier this morning and growing to almost three meters this afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.<\/p>\n
