He is being petted by a police officer outside. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na Clare<\/p>\n<p>Mouse is said to be delighted with his new found fame<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The case of a large &#8220;lion like&#8221; animal being spotted in a wooded area in the Republic of Ireland has been solved by Garda\u00ed (Irish police). <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A video of what was thought to be a lion in a wooded area of County Clare was posted on social media with a report being made to Garda\u00ed on 29 October. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">However, in a social media post on Tuesday it was confirmed the animal was not a Lion but it was Mouse, a Newfoundland dog. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Garda\u00ed from Killaloe joked: &#8220;If you go down to the woods today&#8230;..it&#8217;s not a lion you will find but the very friendly Newfoundland dog named mouse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/bbcdotcom\/web\/20251021-134202-667692b2c6-web-2.32.2-1\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/454c8b90-b997-11f0-aa13-0b0479f6f42a.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na Clare A photo of Mouse, a large brown Newfoundland dog. He is being petted by a police officer outside. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na Clare<\/p>\n<p>Mouse has had his coat shaved, which is most likely why sightings suggested the dog was a lion <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">At the time, the report of &#8220;a large animal in a wooded area in County Clare&#8221; was followed by enquiries from the police. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The police said the Newfoundland dog was &#8220;delighted with his recent video clip&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mouse has had its coat shaved and it is not recommended to shave a Newfoundland as they have a double coat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/bbcdotcom\/web\/20251021-134202-667692b2c6-web-2.32.2-1\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c5764fa0-b99b-11f0-b2a1-6f537f66f9aa.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na Clare A photo of Mouse, a large brown Newfoundland dog. He is being petted by a police officer outside. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na Clare<\/p>\n<p>It is not recommended to shave a double-coat breed<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Siobhan McHaffie, Director of Operations at The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) said whilst the society is &#8220;unsure of the full context regarding Mouse&#8217;s grooming, it&#8217;s important to note that unless it&#8217;s for medical reasons, shaving a Newfoundland&#8217;s coat is generally not recommended&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Their thick double coat plays a vital role in regulating temperature and protecting their skin. Removing it can lead to sunburn, overheating, and other health complications,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ms McHaffie said shaving a Newfoundland for any other reason is &#8220;not advisable&#8221; as it &#8220;compromises their natural protection and wellbeing.
