{"id":262805,"date":"2025-11-04T21:19:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T21:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/262805\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T21:19:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T21:19:17","slug":"south-australian-algal-bloom-source-is-karenia-cristata-scientists-believe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/262805\/","title":{"rendered":"South Australian algal bloom source is Karenia cristata, scientists believe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Scientists believe they may have identified a little-known algal species called Karenia cristata as the source of South Australia&#8217;s devastating algal bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The breakthrough research, which is undergoing the process of academic peer review, also shows it to have been the dominant species for the majority of the bloom&#8217;s existence and one of five Karenia species present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Karenia cristata is the only one known to produce the brevetoxins (algal toxins) behind the bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Shauna Murray, from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), has been leading the research team in a bid to identify the brevetoxin-producing species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her team has been working on the problem since the bloom surfaced near Victor Harbor beaches in March after large amounts of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-18\/algae-bloom-likely-cause-fish-deaths-foam\/105064874\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105064874\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sea foam, marine deaths and acute health symptoms<\/a> in people were noticed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Karenia cristata has not previously been identified in Australian waters.<\/p>\n<p>It has been recorded twice in waters off South Africa and once near Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The research describes Karenia cristata as an &#8220;emerging international threat with unknown consequences in changing ocean conditions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a woman with short, dark hair in a lab looking at the camera\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/388984f79906b6390e3a4f530fbaa76d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">UTS Professor Shauna Murray has been leading the research into the source of the bloom. (Supplied UTS: Toby Burrows)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said the presence of respiratory symptoms in surfers near Victor Harbor in March had suggested the presence of a brevetoxin-producing species in addition to Karenia mikimotoi, which was the initial species identified within the bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That suggestion was confirmed in early May when the South Australia Shellfish Quality Program confirmed that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-08\/millions-oysters-quarantined-sa-algal-bloom\/105266062\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105266062\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brevetoxins were present in South Australian waters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said that was when &#8220;we certainly knew we were looking for a different Karenia species in this bloom&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Race for results<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said identifying the algal species had been a massive task, and the results had been obtained &#8220;incredibly fast&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Typically, this type of research might take a few years to establish, and we did it in just months rather than years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That was because we set up a really, really big team and we all worked extremely hard on this,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Multiple samples were regularly taken from 39 sites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with tied back brown hair in a white lab coat sitting at a desk looking through a microscope.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/9abaa8a6c1a89fde6f2c1b5e4bbd103d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Shauna Murray examines samples under a microscope. (Supplied: Greta Gaiani)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray says Karenia blooms tend not just to consist of one single species, but are made up of a mix of Karenia species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They like to occur together,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the dominant algae within the bloom had been shown to change over time and with location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Generally, across the period, Karenia cristata was the dominant one, but some of the other species were dominant at different times, in different locations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How did Karenia cristata come to be in Australian waters?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said a lack of past research made it impossible to know how or when the algal species was first in Australian waters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because we don&#8217;t know what was there in the past, we can&#8217;t know if it was there all along,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said she suspected that the algae was present &#8220;all along&#8221; because of its previous detections in the geographically disparate locations of Canada and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s part of what we would call the hidden flora \u2014 the species that are present but not very abundant that we never really investigated,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A beach with abnormal amounts of sea foam\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37662bd938677f18b490b0734c06d71a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Foam on South Australia&#8217;s beaches is caused by the algal bloom. (ABC South East SA: Caroline Horn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Little is yet known about Karenia cristata, but Professor Murray said it appeared to have grown best in water temperatures between 14 to 18 degrees in a previous bloom in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said that, anecdotally, it appeared to have followed a similar pattern in South Australia when the growth of the species &#8220;took off&#8221; in the cooler months from May onwards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, she cautioned that much more testing was needed to learn about the conditions that favoured the species.<\/p>\n<p>Badly misunderstood and much to learn<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said the algal bloom had been &#8220;badly misunderstood&#8221; and &#8220;maybe misrepresented&#8221; since the start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the identification of the additional Karenia species was the starting point of the work, and there was much more research to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Murray said monitoring would need to be done, not just in South Australia but around the country, as brevetoxins also had potential human health impacts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large razor fish on a beach, next to a size 7 women's boot for scale\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/a3bf0bf6ab0b263b0ec8c61666fae333\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Razorfish beds within Gulf St Vincent have been hit hard by the algal bloom.
