{"id":262878,"date":"2025-11-04T22:03:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/262878\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T22:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:03:11","slug":"cost-of-probate-records-to-become-ten-times-more-expensive-in-huge-government-price-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/262878\/","title":{"rendered":"Cost of probate records to become ten times more expensive in huge Government price hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The cost of ordering copies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com\/tutorials\/where-are-wills-kept\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">probate records<\/a> will increase from \u00a31.50 to \u00a316 from Monday 17 November.<\/p>\n<p>The government laid out the changes online in Statutory Instrument 2025 No. 1126.<\/p>\n<p>The civil Court of Probate for England and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com\/tutorials\/welsh-family-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales<\/a> was established in 1858. Probate records from that date to the present are available to download on the UK government\u2019s Find a Will website.<\/p>\n<p>They are an important record for allowing family history researchers to view their ancestor\u2019s wills.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of probate records was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com\/news\/government-cuts-probate-record-cost-to-1-50-for-next-12-months\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut<\/a> from \u00a310 to \u00a31.50 in 2019 and has remained at that low price since then.<\/p>\n<p>Family historians are urged to download any records they may need before 17 November.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Williams, editor of Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine, said: \u201cAs a family history magazine, we have always advised our readers to buy wills, but now that they are going up to \u00a316, it will be a much harder decision to make. It is a huge disappointment that the government has increased the pricing by ten-fold.
