More than 50 of these nations also reported job losses among health and care workers, the UN agency noted, a situation made worse by years of financial strain driven by inflation, sovereign debt repayments and a heavy reliance on outside support.<\/p>\n
At risk are critical services such as maternal care, vaccination and disease surveillance in many low and middle-income countries, WHO has warned.<\/p>\n
Lives lost<\/p>\n
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that \u201csudden and unplanned cuts to aid\u201d have already hit many countries hard, \u201ccosting lives and jeopardising hard-won health gains\u201d.<\/p>\n
But he added that now was the time for countries to transition away from \u201caid dependency\u201d towards \u201csustainable self-reliance\u201d by using domestic resources to focus on protecting the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n
Several countries are already taking action. Nigeria has increased its health budget by $200 million to offset external funding cuts, while Ghana has lifted a cap on excise tax revenues to boost its national health insurance fund by 60 per cent.<\/p>\n
WHO said such steps show that national leadership and global solidarity are crucial to sustaining health systems in a new era of constrained aid.<\/p>\n

The UN Human Rights Chief, Volker T\u00fcrk, welcomed Australia\u2019s first formal treaty with Indigenous Peoples on Monday describing it as a \u201cmajor step toward justice and equality\u201d and a \u201csignificant occasion for all Australians.\u201d<\/p>\n
Passed by legislators in the state of Victoria, the treaty establishes a democratically elected First Peoples Assembly – the Gellung\u00a0Warl – along with a \u201ctruth-telling\u201d body, called Nyerna Yoorrook Telkuna, and an accountability body, known as Nginma Ngainga Wara.<\/p>\n
Mr. T\u00fcrk said the initiative marks important progress towards self-determination for the country\u2019s First Peoples, addressing the \u201ccontinued exclusion and discrimination\u201d stemming from colonisation.<\/p>\n
Historic step, \u2018truly transformative\u2019<\/p>\n
In his statement, he added that Victoria\u2019s approach could be \u201ctruly transformative\u201d if fully implemented, ensuring Indigenous communities have a direct voice in shaping laws and policies that affect their lives.<\/p>\n
The move follows the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart, which called for constitutional recognition and a voice for Indigenous Australians. Mr. T\u00fcrk expressed hope that Victoria\u2019s example would inspire similar action elsewhere in Australia and beyond, promoting reconciliation and respect for human rights for all.<\/p>\n
