Two Sydney hospital workers have been critically injured after being hit by a car during a coffee break.<\/p>\n
NSW Ambulance responded to a call from Concord Hospital about 10am on Wednesday after reports a car had struck the pair outside the facility’s entrance.<\/p>\n
Paramedics treated a 47-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, who are Concord Hospital employees.<\/p>\n
Both are in a critical condition at Westmead Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.<\/p>\n

NSW Police said witnesses had told officers a black Mazda mounted the footpath and hit the man and the woman.<\/p>\n
The driver, a 59-year-old woman, was taken to Concord Hospital by police for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, which returned a negative result.<\/p>\n
NSW Police Inspector Paul Chachaty said the woman was being interviewed at Burwood Police Station.<\/p>\n
“The woman was with a passenger. I’m led to believe she was the carer for that passenger,” Inspector Chachaty said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Why she was conducting a U-turn will still form part of our investigation.”<\/p>\n

Officers from the Burwood Police Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances of the crash.<\/p>\n
Inspector Chachaty said the woman was “understandably shaken” but cooperating with the investigation.<\/p>\n
Workers were on a coffee break<\/p>\n
Deb Wilcox, chief executive of Sydney Local Health District, described the collision as a “tragic incident”.<\/p>\n
“All of our thoughts and wishes are with our two staff members and their families and colleagues. It’s a deeply traumatic event that everybody has experienced today,” she said.<\/p>\n
Ms Wilcox said the two workers were struck by the car while getting themselves a coffee during a morning break.<\/p>\n
She would not comment on the condition of the workers, but said they were receiving “complex trauma care”.<\/p>\n
“This is a place that has a very deep culture of caring for each other and everybody is deeply shocked and moved by the events today,” Ms Wilcox said.<\/p>\n
