{"id":265021,"date":"2025-11-05T20:22:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T20:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/265021\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T20:22:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T20:22:12","slug":"the-milky-way-arcs-over-the-very-large-telescope-photo-of-the-day-for-nov-5-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/265021\/","title":{"rendered":"The Milky Way arcs over the Very Large Telescope photo of the day for Nov. 5, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"2617ab90-1118-4233-ae3a-f11bfb46b293\">High atop the arid plateaus of Chile&#8217;s Atacama Desert, one of humanity&#8217;s most powerful astronomical instruments peers into the depths of the cosmos: the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT). <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2543a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2543a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Operated by<\/a> the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Southern Observatory<\/a> (ESO), the VLT has long been at the forefront of astronomical discovery, as scientists use its cutting-edge technology to explore distant galaxies, and some, like our own <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a>, that are closer to home.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Three of the VLT&#8217;s massive domes were recently treated to this view of the Milky Way. Above the observatory, a soft green and red glow, known as airglow, helps to tinge the horizon. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/42371-orange-earth-airglow.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/42371-orange-earth-airglow.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Airglow<\/a> is a natural phenomenon arising from chemical reactions high in Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere, where atoms and molecules release light in the process. Looten\/ESO)<a id=\"elk-4ea5f98e-f0cf-42ba-97b1-a0d90d63dd91\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why is it amazing?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"aff6cc88-2fa9-4bca-9789-710d15528be3-0\">Airglow is incredibly faint, and invisible in most parts of the world because of widespread <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-pollution-serious-threat-astronomy-skywatching\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-pollution-serious-threat-astronomy-skywatching\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light pollution<\/a>. Only in some of Earth&#8217;s darkest places, such as the Atacama Desert, can this natural radiance be seen. It is precisely these conditions that make the VLT&#8217;s site one of the best observing locations on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers are increasingly concerned that even remote observatories like the VLT may one day face the creeping glow of artificial light. Urban expansion, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/scientists-analyze-76-million-radio-telescope-images-find-starlink-satellite-interference-where-no-signals-are-supposed-to-be-present\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/scientists-analyze-76-million-radio-telescope-images-find-starlink-satellite-interference-where-no-signals-are-supposed-to-be-present\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite constellations<\/a> and industrial development all threaten to erode the natural darkness that makes sites like the Atacama Desert invaluable.
