Port Adelaide\u2019s sole AFL premiership captain Warren Tredrea hasn\u2019t been kicked out of the club despite being sacked from the board, new coach Josh Carr says.<\/p>\n
Tredrea last week was removed from the Power\u2019s board after refusing to apologise for an anti-Semitism row.<\/p>\n
Port reviewed Tredrea\u2019s board role after he hosted a podcast with a guest who was criticised for promoting far-right views.<\/p>\n

By continuing you agree to our Terms<\/a> and Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n But Carr, his 2004 premiership teammate who has now officially taken over as Port\u2019s head coach, says Tredrea remains a club great.<\/p>\n \u201cNothing changes from what Tredders is to our football club,\u201d Carr told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a past player, he\u2019s a legend of the footy club, he\u2019s one of the greatest that I ever played with – if not the greatest in the AFL era.<\/p>\n \u201cSo from that point of view, he hasn\u2019t been kicked out of the footy club.\u201cHe\u2019s off the board for obviously the reasons about what is best for the football club and the board made that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n After his dismissal was announced, Tredrea posted on social media he was \u201cconcerned about the actions taken by a number of important people at our club\u201d, without elaborating.<\/p>\n Tredrea hosts a podcast and a guest, British Army veteran AJ Roberts, was criticised by the Jewish Council of Australia for promoting \u201cfar-right anti-Semitic conspiracy theories\u201d and Holocaust denials on the show.<\/p>\n Port\u2019s chief executive officer Matthew Richardson said Tredrea\u2019s removal was a governance matter.<\/p>\n \u201cReasonable people understand what the issue is,\u201d Richardson told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n \u201cThe board did afford Warren numerous opportunities to resolve the matter.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd unfortunately it got to a point where that wasn\u2019t possible so the board, in the best interests of the club, needed to act.\u201d<\/p>\n Carr was flanked at a media conference at the Power\u2019s Alberton headquarters by Richardson and the club\u2019s new general manager of football Ben Rutten.<\/p>\n Rutten, an Adelaide Crows playing great who coached Essendon and was an assistant coach at Richmond, has yet to meet with the Power\u2019s midfield ace Zak Butters.<\/p>\n Butters, winner of the past three club champion awards, is already fielding multi-million dollar offers to return to his native Victoria when his Port contract expires at the end of next season.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s certainly a priority for us to make Zak a long-term player at the club,\u201d Rutten told reporters.<\/p>\n \u201cI have always been a strong believer: we\u2019re not here to convince people to stay, we want to create the environment for people to want to stay (and) people to want to come here.<\/p>\n \u201cI know it\u2019s going to be a bit of a hot topic throughout the year but that\u2019s going to be the way forward for us.\u201d<\/p>\n Carr echoed Rutten\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s about creating the environment that players don\u2019t want to leave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd if they leave, it\u2019s the hardest decision they have ever had to make in their life.<\/p>\n \u201cThe culture of this football club is such a great culture, that everyone wants to be here – and if you decide to leave, then there\u2019s the right reasons are there.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Port Adelaide\u2019s sole AFL premiership captain Warren Tredrea hasn\u2019t been kicked out of the club despite being sacked…\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":266635,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[560],"tags":[638,64,63,55,639,588,85],"class_list":{"0":"post-266634","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-afl","8":"tag-afl","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-australian-football-league","12":"tag-australianfootballleague","13":"tag-sport","14":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/266634","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=266634"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/266634\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/266635"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=266634"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=266634"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=266634"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
