Boxing powerhouse\u00a0Christy\u00a0Martin\u00a0is opening up about her initial reactions to seeing actor\u00a0Ben\u00a0Foster\u00a0<\/a>fully in character on the set of her biopic,\u00a0Christy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI basically freaked out, and I told them, \u2018Do not let that man near me,\u2019\u201d Martin, 57, shared during an exclusive interview with\u00a0Us Weekly\u00a0on Wednesday, November 5. \u201cWe were never in the same area during the entire shooting of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin recalled one day that she \u201cwalked out\u201d while the cast was filming<\/a> in an arena. \u201cI could have gone out 30 doors. I walk out the door that Ben Foster is sitting outside of, and I immediately started cussing him out,\u201d she recalled. \u201cAnd then I realized that\u2019s not\u00a0Jim\u00a0Martin. And you know, I had to reel myself back in, because I really, I don\u2019t know, it was very intense.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Christy,\u00a0which premieres Friday, November 7, Foster, 45, plays Christy\u2019s former boxing coach and abusive ex-husband Jim. The film focuses on Christy\u2019s life, not shying away from the challenges she encountered.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tChristy Martin\u2019s life story is getting the big screen treatment in the movie Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney. Martin is a legendary boxer who paved the way for women in the sport. She earned the nickname \u201cThe Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter\u201d due to her father\u2019s occupation. While Martin is known for her success in the ring, she [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

Sydney\u00a0Sweeney<\/a>\u00a0stars in the title role, with\u00a0Merritt Weaver, Katy O\u2019Brian, Chad Coleman\u00a0and more rounding out the cast. (O\u2019Brian, 36, plays Lisa Holewyne, Christy\u2019s former rival turned partner, who she married in 2017.)<\/p>\n

While speaking to Us, Christy described how difficult it was watching the events of her life unfold on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crazy, the first time I watched it, it was just me and Lisa , and I don\u2019t even remember seeing some of the scenes,\u201d Christy said. \u201cWhen I watched it, when I truly, truly watched it, was in Toronto. And I asked Lisa, I\u2019m like, \u2018That scene wasn\u2019t in it when we saw it.\u2019 She said, \u2018Yes, it was. Your mind, your brain just shut it down for you because you weren\u2019t ready to see it yet.\u2019 It was hard. It\u2019s a lot. I mean, this is somebody [who] tried to kill me and left me for dead, and to see that played out is tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2010, Christy was stabbed and shot by Jim, who attacked her for trying to leave him during an argument. Two years later, Jim was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and aggravated battery. He was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. Jim died in November 2024 while serving his sentence at Graceville Correctional Facility in Florida.<\/p>\n

Though it was difficult, Christy said it was important to share her story<\/a> for any viewers who may be experiencing a similar situation. Christy told\u00a0Us\u00a0she hopes to give others \u201cstrength.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been to, I can\u2019t tell you how many different cities \u2026 we\u2019ve done showings and at the Q&A\u2019s, I have so many women wait[ing] to talk to me in private, to share their story, their daughters, their neighbors, somebody close to them,\u201d Christy told\u00a0Us. \u201cWhether it be about the domestic violence, [or] a lot of people come and talk to me about the sexuality and trying to come out to their parents and not being accepted. \u2026 That\u2019s why we did the movie. That\u2019s why.\u201d<\/p>\n
