De La Soul<\/a> have officially announced their new album,\u00a0Cabin in the Sky, out November 21st via Mass Appeal. As a first preview, they\u2019ve unwrapped the first single, \u201cThe Package.\u201d Stream it below.<\/p>\n

Part of Mass Appeal\u2019s \u201cLegend Has It\u2026\u201d series<\/a> featuring seven new albums from New York hip-hop pioneers,\u00a0Cabin in the Sky marks De La Soul\u2019s first new album since their Grammy-nominated 2016 LP,\u00a0and the Anonymous Nobody<\/a>. It\u2019s also their first project since the\u00a0tragic death<\/a> of co-founder Trugoy the Dove in 2023, though he contributes multiple verses to \u201cThe Package.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project also includes features from Killer Mike, Nas, Black Thought, Common, and Yukimi of Little Dragon. Production was handled by DJ Premier, Super Dave, and Pete Rock, the latter of whom produced \u201cThe Package.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCabin in the Sky lives in that space between loss and light. It\u2019s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us,\u201d Posdnuos said in a press statement. \u201cThis album is therapy and celebration at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThere\u2019s a vulnerability in these songs, because everything we\u2019ve been through has brought us to this moment, to this album, honoring what we\u2019ve lost and lifting up what still remains. That duality. That\u2019s life, and that\u2019s De La.\u201d<\/p>\n

DJ Maseo added, \u201cThe music on this record is not old, just seasoned. It\u2019s what we call adult hip-hop: something rooted in the culture but speaking to where we are now. The beauty is that it still connects with the younger heads, too. They can feel the honesty, the craft, and that De La Soul DNA running through it. We\u2019re bridging generations with this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

With vintage production from Pete Rock, the first verse of \u201cThe Package\u201d finds Pos rapping about moving forward rather than looking back: \u201cIf some wanna take it back to wh\u0435n a B-boy first became a C-note chas\u0435r\/ Nah, you staying right here\/ Talk less, listen more\/ That\u2019s the saying right here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trugoy chimes in on the second verse with lyrics like, \u201cThe difference between doing the job, and just your nature\/ Understand birthright over labor\/ Still working like two thumbs up\/ Be mouse humble if you two crumbs up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, De La Soul looked back at the 20th anniversary of their seventh studio album,\u00a0The Grind Date, with a special reissue<\/a> and released a new animated video<\/a> for their 2004 MF DOOM collaboration \u201cRock Co. Kane Flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
