(ABC Goldfields: Joanna Prendergast)<\/p>\n<p>Five-year lockout<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Five years ago Chinese authorities said the fungal disease blackleg was detected in a shipment of Australian canola and closed the trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since then, China, which is a significant canola producer in its own right, has relied significantly on imports of canola from Canada to top up its needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But earlier this year it blocked Canadian canola seed imports by imposing a massive tariff in a move thought to be related to a stoush over Canadian tariffs on electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In September, Australian government forecasting agency ABARES suggested the completion of a phytosanitary framework addressing China&#8217;s concerns could pave the way for five trial shipments of Australian canola.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person's hand holding small, dark-coloured seeds.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/d434869b62ccc23246793ad8afa9f9ed\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Oil-rich canola seed will be sent to China as part of the trial. (ABC Rural: Rose Grant)<\/p>\n<p>Future potential<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia is the world&#8217;s second-largest exporter of canola and this year&#8217;s 5.2-million tonne crop is expected to be worth $4.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The majority of the canola exported comes from Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Grain Trade Australia chief executive Pat O&#8217;Shannassy said given that China was the world&#8217;s largest buyer of canola, the reopening of trade could offer significant opportunities for Australian producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The negotiation process around biosecurity and quarantine, it doesn&#8217;t move as fast as, say, technology \u2014 once you lose access it is very difficult to get it back,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr O&#8217;Shannassy said once the trial was complete it would be essential that government continued to negotiate for fully restored market access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Having more demand in the market is a good thing for growers \u2026 the China market for Australia, particularity for grains, is very important and long-standing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If we can get that trade flowing again it will be significant for both Australia and China.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry spokesperson said there was &#8220;an active and ongoing government-government discussion&#8221; and that details were yet to be finalised.<\/p>\n<p>Good news for prices<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In its September market update ABARES predicted a moderate increase in canola prices for the coming harvest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black-and-white image of a dark-haired man in a blazer.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/03e649c72817028cf9b7b9458147d09f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dennis Voznesenski says China re-entering the Australia canola market would support prices.
