Measles cases in Western Australia are at a three-decade high as health authorities added more than a dozen new exposure sites across the South West and Great Southern regions this week.

The Department of Health said two new cases of measles had been confirmed, a locally acquired case in the South West related to a returned traveller from Indonesia reported late last month, and another case in the Great Southern from a recent returned traveller from Indonesia.

Shops, a brewery, a regional emergency department and Perth International Airport are among the latest exposure sites added to the public health alert.

Anyone at the below locations during the specified times should monitor for symptoms of the highly contagious virus between seven and 18 days from exposure.

Symptoms usually develop after about 10 days and include fever, fatigue, runny nose, cough and sore eyes. These symptoms are typically followed by a red, blotchy rash three to four days later, starting on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

There have been 54 cases of measles in WA this year. The last time cases exceeded the current caseload was 1997, when 82 cases were recorded.

Health authorities are urging people born after 1965 to make sure they’ve had two documented doses of a measles-containing vaccine at some stage in their life.

Contact tracing continues and further exposure locations may be added to the public health alert in coming days.
