This full moon was recently captured by Petr Hor\u00e1lek of NOIRLab in the Atacama Desert in Chile, where important astronomical observatories like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT) and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array<\/a> (ALMA) reside.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">A gibbous moon, like the one <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/iotw2544a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/iotw2544a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">captured here,<\/a> refers to a phase in which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> is more than half illuminated but not yet full, or just after full, when it&#8217;s starting to wane. These maria were created when the moon had active volcanoes.
