(Image credit: NASA\/Kim Shiflett)<\/p>\n<p id=\"b74433cc-7624-4259-80bf-76708d0f0654\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-blue-origin-mars-spacecraft-mission-contract\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-blue-origin-mars-spacecraft-mission-contract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESCAPADE<\/a> (short for &#8220;Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers&#8221;) will be the first Mars mission to launch in more than five years, since NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance rover<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-helicopter-ingenuity-opened-red-planet-skies-exploration\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-helicopter-ingenuity-opened-red-planet-skies-exploration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ingenuity helicopter<\/a> lifted off together on July 30, 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b74433cc-7624-4259-80bf-76708d0f0654-1\">The $80 million ESCAPADE mission consists of two spacecraft, which were built by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Lab<\/a> and will be operated for NASA by the University of California, Berkeley. That latter fact explains the duo&#8217;s names \u2014 Blue and Gold, which are UC-Berkeley&#8217;s school colors.<\/p>\n<p>New Glenn will launch Blue and Gold toward the Earth-sun <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lagrange Point<\/a> 2 (L2), a gravitationally stable spot about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) beyond our planet.<\/p>\n<p>The pair will hang out there for 12 months while studying <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a>. They&#8217;ll loop by Earth in November 2026, getting a gravitational boost from our planet to head out to Mars, which they&#8217;ll reach about 10 months later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>This complex trajectory is required by orbital dynamics: Earth and Mars align just once every 26 months for efficient interplanetary travel, and the next such window opens in late 2026.<\/p>\n<p>After they reach the Red Planet, the ESCAPADE probes will spend about seven months lowering themselves into precisely aligned orbits, then gather data for at least 11 months.<\/p>\n<p>The orbiters will &#8220;fly in formation to map the magnetic fields, upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Mars in 3D, providing the first stereo view of the Red Planet\u2019s unique near-space environment,&#8221; UC-Berkeley wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2025\/11\/05\/nasas-escapade-mission-to-mars-twin-uc-berkeley-satellites-dubbed-blue-and-gold-will-launch-in-early-november\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2025\/11\/05\/nasas-escapade-mission-to-mars-twin-uc-berkeley-satellites-dubbed-blue-and-gold-will-launch-in-early-november\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mission description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What they find will help scientists understand how and when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-missing-atmosphere-hiding-plain-sight-clay-methane\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-missing-atmosphere-hiding-plain-sight-clay-methane\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars lost its atmosphere<\/a> and provide key information about conditions on the planet that could affect people who land or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/humanity-could-settle-mars-by-2055-elon-musk-says\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/humanity-could-settle-mars-by-2055-elon-musk-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">settle on Mars<\/a>,&#8221; the university added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3bd5c478-e801-48cb-a2a5-a09a2f5f3b46\">Sunday&#8217;s launch will be the second to date for New Glenn, which can haul about 50 tons (45 metric tons) of payload to low Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket debuted with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-launches-massive-new-glenn-rocket-into-orbit-on-1st-flight-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-launches-massive-new-glenn-rocket-into-orbit-on-1st-flight-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successful test flight<\/a> on Jan. 16, 2025, which sent a prototype version of Blue Origin&#8217;s Blue Ring spacecraft platform to orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The company failed in its attempt to land New Glenn&#8217;s first stage on a ship at sea that day.
