(Supplied: Christine Newton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was also thinking, what have I done to get this, what could I have done better, have I hurt little bub?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was also very surprised as I am a healthy person, but I was happy to tackle the disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One in five pregnant women diagnosed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Statistically Ms Newton is among &#8220;one in five&#8221; of pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A patient at Australia&#8217;s largest maternity hospital The Mater Mothers in Brisbane, she was put onto a management plan where she had to test her glucose levels four times a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She used an app co-designed by the CSIRO called &#8220;Mother&#8221; to log and send data to nutritionists \u2014 who helped create a diet and exercise regime to reduce sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was definitely worrying about my fasting levels, that I would have to have insulin when I woke up every day,&#8221; Ms Newton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I managed that with the help of the team, especially the nutritionists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A mother in a strapless dress holds a newborn baby on a multi-coloured blanket\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4e33ebc7a38df5fec5b6237b1b613adf\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Statistically she was &#8220;one in five&#8221; of pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes. (ABC News: Mark Leonardi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Women often feel like they are at fault when they get diagnosed, and quite concerned they have done something,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the spike was partly due to hormonal differences from the placenta, but it had also been put down to women being older in their first pregnancy; possibly overweight and not doing enough exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Staggering rise in cases needing injections<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Data shows a third need insulin injections for their entire pregnancies, while the remaining 70 per cent can treat the disease with diet and sometimes tablets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Associate Professor Laurie said there was also a danger postpartum with women at risk of kidney and heart disease in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a mum and dad holding a baby\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0f9da632d3f15f771507cfae8ca617ef\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Indiana is two weeks old and doing just fine. (ABC News: Mark Leonardi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We see them in the first year after the pregnancy and have clear links with their GPs&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were one of the first, and leader in Australia, and it is being championed now in other facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Unlike a lot of care and medical research for men this has been missing for women. (ABC News: Mark Leonardi)<\/p>\n<p>Extremely concerning epidemic<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Diabetes Australia&#8217;s chief medical officer professor David Simmons said the spike was extremely concerning, with lifestyle reasons mostly driving it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is extremely concerning, we do not want these large numbers of people having these kind of risks&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Headshot of David Simmons who is smiling and wearing glasses.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/8a2767407e34b5e92e5228495a362bfb\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Professor David Simmons says Australia is lagging behind some countries when it comes to subsidising new diabetes technologies.\u00a0 (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;One of the things we have picked up is that a large number come into pregnancy with pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And later on during the pregnancy there is a surge of insulin resistance and that adds a further number of women who can&#8217;t make enough insulin for their own needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The larger they are the more risk they have of getting gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And as you get older you do not make enough insulin when pregnant&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said there was a global debate about how high blood glucose levels should be, before a doctor should raise a red flag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Glucose levels fluctuate, so when you draw a line and say if you are above this you have got something if you are below it then you don&#8217;t you are going to miss some on either side,&#8221; Professor Simmons said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are going to over-diagnose some and under-diagnose others.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a baby in arms\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/3aa6ea4dc07b9cc726c5a9426688a5f3\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Indiana is a happy baby.\u00a0 (ABC News: Mark Leonardi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last year new national guidelines were introduced, and potentially affect more than 280,000 pregnant Australian women every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They will still have an oral glucose tolerance test, a measure of how the body processes sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The test involves fasting overnight, and having a blood test in the morning before drinking a sugary drink.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a pregnant woman being tested\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/755f408a284b38fe820e5c11c2f3005e\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mums-to-be are encouraged to get regular check-ups.
