A teenager has been jailed after he killed his passenger the day after he got his driver\u2019s licence.<\/p>\n
Corey Cooper, then 17, killed his friend Joshua Atkins, who was also 17, in a horrific car crash on November 11, 2023 in Sheffield.<\/p>\n
Cooper lost control of his Fiat car and ploughed into metal fencing on Myers Grove Lane, Stannington.<\/p>\n

By continuing you agree to our Terms<\/a> and Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing Joshua\u2019s death and to dangerous driving causing series injury to a second unnamed passenger.<\/p>\n In court, police played footage which showed Cooper driving 85km\/h in a 30km\/h zone while his dashboard was \u201clit up like a Christmas tree\u201d.<\/p>\n Joshua suffered extreme injuries to his spine and brain and though he was rushed to hospital he could not be saved.<\/p>\n His family made the decision to donate his organs. The boy\u2019s heart went to a man in his 40s, his liver to a man in his 50s and his kidneys to a man and woman in their 20s.<\/p>\n The second passenger was seriously injured in the crash, but survived.<\/p>\n In a statement read out in court, the second passenger said the crash would \u201chaunt\u201d him for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery lost dream, every night I can\u2019t sleep and every tear shed for my best friend Joshua was avoidable.\u201d<\/p>\n Cooper was sentenced to five years in jail.<\/p>\n Inspector Kieran Frain said the community\u2019s thoughts \u201cremain with Josh\u2019s family and all those who loved him\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile today\u2019s sentencing will hopefully bring closure to Josh\u2019s family and end a two-year investigation, it doesn\u2019t bring Josh back. On the 11 November 2023, three families\u2019 lives were changed forever.<\/p>\n \u201cCorey was a 17-year-old boy at the time of the collision, and while he didn\u2019t set out that evening to kill anyone but he did, through a lack of maturity, responsibility and an increase in risk taking.<\/p>\n \u201cYoung drivers often feel invincible. Driving on public roads is a privilege\u2014not a right\u2014and it carries the duty to protect not only yourself, but also your passengers and everyone around you.
