{"id":271883,"date":"2025-11-08T21:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/271883\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T21:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:39:11","slug":"david-bowie-and-prince-inspired-victors-looks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/271883\/","title":{"rendered":"David Bowie and Prince Inspired Victor&#8217;s Looks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/guillermo-del-toro\/\" id=\"auto-tag_guillermo-del-toro\" data-tag=\"guillermo-del-toro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guillermo del Toro<\/a> reunited with \u201cCrimson Peak\u201d costume designer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/kate-hawley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kate-hawley\" data-tag=\"kate-hawley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Hawley<\/a> to help bring the look of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/frankenstein\/\" id=\"auto-tag_frankenstein\" data-tag=\"frankenstein\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frankenstein<\/a>\u201d to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Hawley got the call, as a lover of the romantics and former art history student, the first thing she did was leap back into the pages of the book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut Hawley admits, \u201cKnowing that we were going on the journey with Guillermo meant a whole lot of wonderful things: trepidation as well as excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFrankenstein\u201d stars Oscar Isaac as a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a Creature (Jacob Elordi) to life in an experiment as he tries to conquer death. It\u2019s an experiment that leads to his undoing, and begs the question, who is the monster?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMia Goth also stars as Elizabeth. Ralph Ineson is Professor Krempe and Chrstoph Watlz plays Harlander. The cast also includes Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Covery and Charles Dance, who plays Victor\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film is set firmly during the Crimean War in the 1850s. Hawley says del Toro was \u201cvery clear that he wanted this world to be bigger and larger than normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHere, Hawley breaks down the character looks she created.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVictor Frankenstein<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/VICTOR_LAB-LOOK_CONCEPT_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"791\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen it came to crafting his looks, del Toro had no shortage of references for Hawley. \u201cThere were a lot that we discussed. There were the more contemporary references of David Bowie, and Oscar, who mentioned Prince.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe initial childhood of Victor Frankenstein lends itself more to that age of enlightenment. Hawley says, \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a nod more to the world and time period of Mary Shelley herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen the film hits the 1850s, Hawley says there was a broader sweep of the period. del Toro was clear he didn\u2019t want a historical film with \u201clots of black top hats. I want a modern sensibility which is very much what was happening during the war in terms of technology and the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdditionally, Hawley looked at Lord Bryon, \u201cHe\u2019s an artist finding his muse. He\u2019s not a scientist in the way that we traditionally know it, this is art that he\u2019s building. We looked at all those references with bohemian irreverence and the way he wears his clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVictor comes from the aristocracy. When audiences first see him, he\u2019s presenting his invention in a theater. Hawley wanted to tell a story about the thick velvet he wears, but also show that a period of time had passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe velvets are old and worn. There\u2019s a story being told of someone who\u2019s sort of run out of money at this point, but he still has these lovely garments left over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs he gives his presentation, he meets Harlander, and the two begin a courtship. Frankenstein enjoys the money. \u201cHis clothes become more flamboyant,\u201d says Hawley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tElizabeth\u2019s Wedding Dress<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Elizabeth_frankenstein_bride.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"869\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHawley knew the importance of Elizabeth\u2019s wedding dress. She links the entire story together. In crafting the character\u2019s arc, Hawley says it was one of the first things she created.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt had its own pressures,\u201d Hawley admits, knowing there would be the history of Frankenstein\u2019s bride, but also having to make the dress work within the confines of the Victorian world. Elizabeth\u2019s wedding to Victor\u2019s brother, William, comes towards the final act of the film. By this point, she has formed a bond with the Creature. To reflect that, Hawley notes, \u201cElizabeth\u2019s clothes in this stage in particular start echoing the world of the Creature more than the other world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe bodice was the Swiss style of the time, with boning and a pointed bottom, while the ribbons on the arms and corsetry \u201csuggest the skeletal components of the Creature itself.\u201d Hawley adds, \u201cWe\u2019re going back to the anatomical language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAll of Elizabeth\u2019s gowns are tied to botany and the natural world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHer blue dress was based on the form of an X-ray. \u201cWe developed (an x-ray) as a print that also suggests a bit of the Victorian damask but feels part of the world and anatomy that we use a lot within patterns, textures and motifs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt took a few months for Hawley and her team to put together because it was going to be used for a nighttime scene. \u201cWe had to do a huge amount of work within the layers to keep the saturation of blue that Guillermo wanted.\u201d For Hawley, the dress evokes the ephemeral, ethereal nature of Elizabeth. When he wakes up after the lab explosion, one of the first items he retrieves is a coat from the the burial ground of a Crimean War soldier. Hawley says, \u201cAs he goes through his travels and as he experiences warmth and love, he\u2019s a constant, evolving metamorphosis in clothing alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen audiences first sees him, Hawley describes him as a \u201cnaked child underneath.\u201d And so she started from the inside out, echoing what prosthetics artist Mike Hill was doing in his sculpting. \u201cMy job was to echo it and to keep the value of the Creature coming through the clothes.
