{"id":272047,"date":"2025-11-08T23:26:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T23:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/272047\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T23:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T23:26:09","slug":"shark-filmed-in-shallows-at-popular-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/272047\/","title":{"rendered":"shark filmed in shallows at popular beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Locals have been taken aback by the sight of a shark swimming metres from the shoreline at a popular Sunshine Coast beach.<\/p>\n<p>Beachgoers noticed it at Dicky Beach, in front of the main car park, about 5am on November 1.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsty Cammish was among those to film the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d headed down to the beach for sunrise and watched another couple filming something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought we saw a fin but we weren\u2019t close enough to identify what it was, assuming it was maybe a dolphin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 30 minutes passed and my husband spotted the fin again, so we ran down for a closer look and were absolutely stunned.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>For more local news videos SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel. Just click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@sunshinecoastnews9072\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a pretty incredible thing to see first thing in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byron Durovic also captured footage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was shocked when I saw it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy partner and I woke up at 4am to watch the sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chucked my boardies on to go for a swim and when we went down, I saw a fin about 5m from my feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told my partner \u2018I swear I just saw a shark\u2019 but she didn\u2019t believe me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt (then) popped out right in front of us, belly touching the water. It was swimming insanely slow, almost as if it was just going for a stroll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went in the water, a bit deeper, to try get a closer look but it disappeared and then reappeared about 30 seconds later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Queensland University of Technology fish biologist Victoria Camilieri-Asch viewed the footage and said the shark could be a juvenile blacktip or a juvenile from a larger whaler shark species, like a bull shark.<\/p>\n<p>She said sharks can be found in shallow areas, particularly between high and low tide lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese areas serve as important habitats for foraging and mating, and often provide nursery grounds for younger sharks, which benefit from more complex habitats such as these to hide from larger predators,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-184141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SCN061125-shark-pic-Byron-Durovic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1233\" height=\"822\"  \/>Byron Durovic was about to go for a swim, when he saw this shark.
