Draymond Green<\/a> didn\u2019t sugarcoat it.<\/p>\n After the Golden State Warriors<\/a> were steamrolled 129\u2013104 by the Denver Nuggets<\/a> on Friday night, the four-time NBA<\/a> champion unleashed a scathing postgame critique of his team\u2019s defense \u2014 and himself.<\/p>\n \u201cOur defense sucks,\u201d Green said<\/a> bluntly. \u201cAnd we\u2019re 5-5. And they go hand in hand.\u201d<\/p>\n The Warriors\u2019 defensive collapse was on full display in Denver. Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic<\/a> didn\u2019t even need the fourth quarter to dominate, finishing with 29 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists \u2014 just one shy of a triple-double. The Nuggets shot 56.1% overall and drained 16-of-33 three-pointers, effortlessly exposing Golden State\u2019s defensive lapses.<\/p>\n It was the Warriors\u2019 fourth loss in their last five games, a far cry from their promising 4-1 start.<\/p>\n Green Takes the Blame \u2014 and Demands Accountability<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve failed,\u201d Green admitted postgame. \u201cIf our defense looks as [expletive] as it does, I\u2019ve failed. So you can send as many messages as you want \u2014 until we do it, I\u2019m failing at it.\u201d<\/p>\n Green, widely regarded as the emotional backbone of Golden State\u2019s dynasty, didn\u2019t stop there. He called out his teammates for a lack of defensive pride and individual effort.<\/p>\n \u201cNo. 1, it\u2019s taking the challenge \u2014 a personal challenge,\u201d Green said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to take the personal challenge to guard your man. Then if you get beat, there\u2019s help. But right now we\u2019re just relying on the help to beat everyone. When you don\u2019t give effort, then help can\u2019t get there.\u201d<\/p>\n He emphasized that elite defense begins with individual accountability, not just schemes or rotations. \u201cIt starts individually. Everybody must take the challenge of guarding their man, and then you build out from there.\u201d<\/p>\n Missing Pieces, Missing Effort<\/p>\n The Warriors were without Stephen Curry<\/a> for the second straight game as he recovers from the flu. Newly-signed veteran Al Horford<\/a> also sat out for load management, his fourth missed game of the season. That left Green to man the middle against Jokic, a near-impossible assignment even with help from Quinten Post<\/a> and Trayce Jackson-Davis<\/a> off the bench.<\/p>\n Denver\u2019s backcourt punished Golden State just as badly. Jamal Murray<\/a> sliced through the defense for 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding eight assists, while the Nuggets\u2019 bench stretched the lead to as much as 28.<\/p>\n All Warriors players finished with a negative in the plus-minus column. That tells you how disconnected the team was on both ends.<\/p>\n Youth Movement Stumbles as Defense Disintegrates<\/p>\n Golden State\u2019s young core struggled mightily. Brandin Podziemski<\/a> and Jonathan Kuminga<\/a> each shot 3-for-10 from the field, while Moses Moody<\/a> went 1-for-9. None provided the spark or defensive intensity Green demanded.<\/p>\n With Curry sidelined and Horford resting, the Warriors\u2019 lack of communication, rotations, and rebounding turned the game into a clinic for the 2023 champions.<\/p>\n Green\u2019s Message: Play Hard, Defend Harder<\/p>\n \u201cI think we need to be a hard-playing team,\u201d Green said. \u201cWe need to be great on the defensive end and we need to be hard-playing. If those two things happen, everything else falls into place. But we must be a high-energy, high-effort team and we must be a great defensive team.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf we can\u2019t reach those milestones,\u201d he warned, \u201cwe don\u2019t stand a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n A Wake-Up Call for Golden State<\/p>\n The Warriors entered the 2025 NBA season with championship expectations after retooling their roster and adding veteran experience. But their recent performances tell a different story \u2014 one of defensive breakdowns, inconsistent effort, and fading identity.<\/p>\n With the team now sitting at 5-5 and their once-elite defense in shambles, Green\u2019s public challenge may prove to be a pivotal moment.
