A man in police custody since a “catastrophic” crash killed a 30-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl has been confirmed as the partner of the woman driving and father and stepfather of the children in the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The woman was in a vehicle with her two daughters and two sons, one of them a toddler, when it rolled early on Friday morning in the Indigenous community of Doomadgee, about 400 kilometres north of Mount Isa.<\/p>\n
The mother died at the scene and her 10-year-old daughter was taken to Doomadgee Hospital, where she later died.<\/p>\n
The three other children in the vehicle, each under five, were also injured.<\/p>\n
A young girl remained in a critical condition. Her brother’s condition had improved from critical to stable while in hospital.<\/p>\n
A toddler received minor injuries in the crash.<\/p>\n
Police said the man had been in a separate car at the time of the crash, and that both cars had now been relocated to Mount Isa for examination.<\/p>\n
Acting Superintendent Paul Austin said the 28-year-old man had been in a relationship with the woman killed in the crash, and was a parent and stepfather to the children in the vehicle at the time.<\/p>\n

He said the man would remain in custody, but police would take him to Townsville.<\/p>\n
No charges have been laid.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Austin said the question of domestic violence would form part of the investigation, but it remained broad.<\/p>\n
“We’re looking at everything,” he said.<\/p>\n
“As you can imagine, it’s certainly a tragic event.<\/p>\n
“The investigation must be methodical and comprehensive.”<\/p>\n

He said the Doomadgee community was shattered following the “catastrophic crash”.<\/p>\n
“Certainly the grief that’s been experienced as a result of this incident has been extreme,” Superintendent Austin said.<\/p>\n
“We will continue to do whatever we can to support the community through this time.”<\/p>\n
Superintendent Austin said he could not comment on whether speed, alcohol, drug use or other factors played a role in the crash, except to say that Forensic Crash officers examined the scene after the incident.<\/p>\n
Police said the images of the cars had been released as part of a wider appeal for information.\u00a0<\/p>\n
