Hungarian Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 took to social media late Saturday to aggressively counter claims that the exemption was a temporary, one-year measure.<\/p>\n

\u201cFake news,\u201d he declared<\/a> in a weekend volley that would be right at home in a full-blown diplomatic spat. \u201cThe exemption is permanent for an indefinite period,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

His unequivocal statement was met with an equally definitive rebuttal from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity to Kyiv Post, dismissed Hungary\u2019s version with a curt, two-word correction: \u201cNothing is indefinite.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Kyiv Post reported<\/a> earlier, US officials said Friday the exemption was for one year only \u2013 a timeline that undercuts the narrative Orb\u00e1n is selling to his domestic base ahead of a challenging election year.<\/p>\n

The meeting between the two nationalist leaders was, by all accounts, warm. Trump publicly praised Orb\u00e1n, hailing his hardline stance on immigration and even appearing sympathetic to Hungary\u2019s geographic bind.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking at it,\u201d Trump said<\/a> Friday. \u201cIt\u2019s very different for him to get the oil and gas from other areas… they don\u2019t have sea. They don\u2019t have the ports.\u201d<\/p>\n

In return for the reprieve, a White House official noted that Budapest had committed to buying US liquefied natural gas (LNG) under contracts valued at roughly $600 million \u2013 a concession that fits neatly into Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First\u201d energy agenda.<\/p>\n

Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3\u2019s social media blitz \u2013 insisting, \u201cAnyone who claims otherwise was not present at the negotiations. It is much easier to ask those of us who were there\u201d \u2013 is a direct, aggressive challenge to the White House\u2019s public statement.<\/p>\n

It suggests that, in the Oval Office, an \u201cindefinite\u201d nod was given, which US aides are now attempting to roll back into a more conventional, term-limited diplomatic arrangement.<\/p>\n

The episode is vintage Trump: a deal struck on personal rapport with a foreign leader, immediately followed by a scramble among US officials to pin down the concrete terms of the agreement.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also classic Orb\u00e1n: seizing maximum political advantage from a friendly meeting, then using the claim of \u201cfake news\u201d to shut down any inconvenient details that diminish his diplomatic triumph.<\/p>\n

Allies watching nervously <\/p>\n

For Washington\u2019s foreign policy establishment, the short-term waiver is a damage-control measure \u2013 preventing an all-out rupture with an important, if often contrarian, NATO ally while maintaining leverage.<\/p>\n
