I had a very clear opportunity and I went for it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two on the outside braked quite late and, yeah, there was a bit of a lockup but I could see Kimi wasn\u2019t giving any space, and I can\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In analysis on Sky Sports, both experts Karun Chandhok and Jamie Chadwick felt like Piastri was hard done by.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh my god!&#8221; Norris on Piastri crash | 00:11<\/p>\n<p>Chandhok noted that Antonelli \u201chad to know he was the meat in the sandwich\u201d, while Chadwick said it was a \u201cracing incident\u201d, and that Piastri was \u201chard done by\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person who hasn\u2019t used all the room is Kimi for me. So I\u2019m on the side where Oscar has been hard done by. I feel like he (Antonelli) could\u2019ve held position but made his life easier,\u201d Chadwick said. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Piastri locking up, she added: \u201cHe\u2019s not locked up because he\u2019s out of control. He\u2019s locked because he\u2019s (Antonelli) turned in on him a bit (and that\u2019s Piastri\u2019s reaction).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chandhok later said that he is \u201cnot going to disagree\u201d with that analysis, calling it a \u201cstrong\u201d penalty. Although, he did suggest a more lenient penalty on Piastri could be argued given the hefty consequences of the contact. <\/p>\n<p>OScar Piastri crashes in his McLArenSource: FOX SPORTS<\/p>\n<p>Leclerc hinted at a similar outcome when reacting to the incident that ended his race. He said that, having watched the replays, it was clear that Piastri was not completely at fault.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOscar was optimistic but Kimi knew he was on the inside I think, and he kind of did the corner like Oscar was never there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the blame isn\u2019t all on Oscar even if he was optimistic, it could\u2019ve been avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli defended himself post race, saying that he felt like he was leaving Leclerc enough room without closing in on Piastri.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he locked up and started to miss the apex,\u201d Antonelli said of Piastri. \u201cIt was a big hit to be fair\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Sky Sports\u2019 Ted Kravitz said he believed it was the \u201cdefinition of a racing incident\u201d, and that everyone he had heard from in the paddock felt the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcept for the stewards&#8230;\u201d he noted on Ted\u2019s Notebook. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There was no avoiding the penalty that leaves Piastri nearly a full race behind Norris on points. <\/p>\n<p>Despite widespread criticism for the decision, Martin Brundle, Alex\u2019s father, said it was \u201cfair\u201d, even if he did sympathise with the move from Piastri.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the standard penalty. There were no mitigating circumstances, so I\u2019m not surprised,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had to have a go, there\u2019s no doubt about that, but the penalty is a fair cop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full stewards ruling said that Piastri also has had two points added to his superlicence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPIA did not establish the required overlap prior to and at the apex, as his front axle was not alongside the mirror of Car 12, as defined in the Driving Standard Guidelines for overtaking on the inside of a corner,\u201d the ruling reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 10-second time penalty and 2 penalty points are considered appropriate and consistent with recent precedents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Classy Piastri congratulates Norris | 00:37<\/p>\n<p>\u2018NOT THE LEVEL I WANT TO BE\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said after the race that there was simply nothing to do other than to take the penalty on the chin. <\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he said that the team would review the incident before fully moving on. <\/p>\n<p>Both Stella and Piastri noted that outside of the penalty, there were still issues for Piastri who was again not up to Norris\u2019 race pace. <\/p>\n<p>Piastri still fronted up for the team photo after the race.Source: AFP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the penalty was one thing, but I don\u2019t think the pace was at a level that I wanted it to be,\u201d Piastri said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second half of the race was potentially not too bad but the first stint was a little bit tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust trying to get back on top of things with that and have the best weekends we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stella said that getting Piastri fully back up to speed after a challenging few races remains one of the team\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need certainly to make sure that we can extract the full potential out of the car and out of Oscar\u2019s driving in all conditions. Lately we have faced these low-grip conditions which have challenged his natural style,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure that we are able to extract the most even when things don\u2019t work to our natural strengths. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso we need to look at the execution of the weekend because crashing in the Sprint, today with the penalty.
